ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Two Atlantic City fire battalion chiefs had to walk off the job and retire while fighting a blaze that destroyed four buildings and displaced 17 people.

No residents or firefighters were injured.

Battalion Chiefs Robert Macready and Kevin Bennett responded to the fire on Atlantic Avenue late Tuesday. The two already had turned in paperwork saying they would retire on Oct. 1.

So when Tuesday became Wednesday, the men had to leave the scene.

Chief Dennis Brooks tells The Press of Atlantic City every firefighter wants to end their career doing their job.

Macready served 41 years as a firefighter and Bennett spent more than 31 years with the department.

Wind-whipped flames swept through the stores and apartments, destroying them.

The cause remains under investigation.
