Son of NY Islanders legend arrested in overdose death of NY Rangers' Derek Boogaard

The son of a New York Islanders legend has been arrested in connection with the oxycodone overdose death of a New York Rangers player.

Jordan Hart, son of Islanders great Gary Hart, faces charges stemming from the 2011 death of Rangers defenseman Derek Boogaard, WNYW is reporting. Another person, Oscar Johnson, was also arrested in the raid.

The younger Hart was arrested by Drug Enforcement Agency officers Tuesday morning on Long Island, sources told the station.

Authorities claim Jordan Hart and Johnson were supplying Boogaard with the prescription oxycodone that killed him, according to an indictment obtained by AOL News.

Jordan Hart met an unnamed teammate of Boogaard's while playing minor league hockey during the 2007-8 and 2008-9 seasons, authorities said. That teammate is believed by authorities to have linked the pair up.

Johnson is a physician's assistant who was part of the medical team that took care of Jordan Hart's team, a minor-league affiliate of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks.

Johnson is accused of writing prescriptions for Jordan Hart totaling nearly 3,000 pills from 2008 to 2010, authorities charged in the indictment.

Boogaard began buying the pills from Jordan Hart about one year before he died, according to the indictment. The last pills are believed by officials to have been purchased only two weeks before his death.

Authorities uncovered the scheme to sell Boogaard the pills during a routine review of prescriptions written to current and former athletes, according to the DEA.

Boogaard was found May 13, 2011 dead in his Minneapolis apartment. The former Rangers enforcer was 28-years-old when he died. Authorities blamed a toxic cocktail of alcohol and oxycodone.

He had suffered a severe concussion in the months before his death that only intensified his addiction to painkillers, officials said.

He played the first five years of his career with the Minnesota Wild before signing a four-year deal to join the rangers prior to the 2010-2011 season, but his pain killer addiction had already set in.

Boogard reportedly broke a tooth during a 2008 on-ice fight. He then found his way to more than 430 prescription pain killers by the end of that season alone, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The hockey player's family later filed a lawsuit claiming the league was responsible for "Boogie's" pain killer addiction. No settlement or agreement has yet been reached with the Boogaard family.

Jordan Hart apparently became his supplier when he made the switch to New York, he now reportedly faces more than 20 in prison if convicted.
