Iconic Colossus roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain catches on fire

The iconic Colossus roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain caught fire Monday afternoon.

Colossus is the most famous coaster at the suburban Los Angeles theme park. It is currently closed while undergoing a rebuilding for the 2015 season, Six Flags previously announced.

Smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from miles away, and dramatic images showed flames ravaging the wooden roller coaster.

The fire appears to have started at the highest point on the ride, based on photos of the blaze posted to social media.

Aerial footage from KTLA showed that part of the ride's track had collapsed while more of the ride remained charred.

LA County fire officials announced just after reports of the fire surfaced that it had been brought under control.

The 36-year-old throwback closed last month to be rebuilt into "Twisted Colossus," a hybrid wood and metal coaster meant to "be the best of both worlds."

Plans included having the ride intentionally slow down while upside-down, a virtual high five with another coaster, a Zero G Roll (360 twist in the track) and a 128-foot vertical drop at an 80-degree angle.
