Shootings reported by NYC West Indian parade route

NEW YORK (AP) - Hours before the West Indian Day Parade stepped off Monday, police reported multiple shootings - one of them deadly - near the route for the political see-and-be-seen event, which has been scarred by violence in recent years.

Police said they were taking steps to ensure the parade remains safe this year, including keeping tabs on any gang activity.

A 55-year-old man was shot and killed at 3:30 a.m. in Brooklyn's Crown Heights, according to police. A suspect was in custody; charges were pending.

It was one of several shootings reported in the vicinity before the 11 a.m. parade start, police said. They are still gathering details on the others.

Last year, two people were fatally stabbed at the parade, and a man was shot to death in 2011.

The parade celebrates Caribbean culture and echoes traditional pre-Lenten Carnival festivities, with dancers wearing elaborate, feathered costumes.

The event also provides one of the last big stages before the Sept. 9 primary.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is this year's grand marshal, but plenty of other political faces are expected in the lineup, including Mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, who is of Caribbean decent.

In the past, organizers say more than a million people watched the parade.

What a surprise, GUN SHOTS! Lets be kinder to the criminals, no more stop and frisk and we can keep our fingers crossed that they will be good boys and girls!
Oh and don't forget fairy god mothers!

How are those ultra strict gun laws doing you NY? LOL! LIke I ahve been saying to the clueless anti gun morons....when you have gun bans or strict gun laws only the law abiding citizens follow the law. Criminals will always have their guns and shoot them when they want. You take the control from the good people and put it in the hands of criminals. Gun laws dont work!

This must be a mistake. After all, guns are all but illegal in NYC, and you have to be rich and politically connected to get a carry permit.

I once lived not far from this community. Rarely does this parade occur without some kind of violence.

Why is that? The article didn't have the guts to discuss this aspect of the report.
