The story involving USC Trojans defensive back Josh Shaw adds a new layer every hour, it appears.

TMZ is now reporting that on Monday Shaw and a USC Trojans teammate had a heated argument in the locker room. The two men reportedly had to be separated before things became physical.

Shaw, who injured both of his ankles, told USC officials that he had himself after jumping off of a balcony to save his drowning nephew. The defensive back later admitted that the entire story was fabricated and he has been suspended indefinitely from the team.

According to the TMZ report, the entire locker room argument began when one of Shaw's teammates told him to quit lying about the bogus story and to come clean.

We spoke with multiple sources in the USC athletic department who all say the same thing ... the player who confronted Shaw - a respected member of the defense - was pissed off because he knew the story was bogus and got right in Shaw's face about it.

During the confrontation - which occurred right after the initial story about Shaw saving his 7-year-old cousin from drowning was posted on a USC media outlet - the player yelled at Shaw, "Why you lying?"

We're told the situation got very intense very quickly - and several teammates rushed in to separate the two before things got violent.

USC investigated Shaw's claims about the incident after hearing conflicting reports.

There is no word on whether or not the university was informed by Shaw's teammates or if the locker room incident tipped off their investigation.
