Timeline: Michael Brown's death, the Ferguson protests and his funeral

The unarmed black teen shot dead August 9 by a white cop in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson is finally being laid to rest.

Michael Brown's killing by white police officer Darren Wilson, 28, sent the St. Louis suburb into a tailspin. He is now being buried after multiple autopsies were conducted, but the investigation appears to be far from over.

Riots and looting raged on for more than a week - but tensions have calmed and the National Guard has left after spending several days in the turbulent town.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon ordered the military out of Ferguson last week, only one day after U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder made the highly unusual decision to directly control the investigation into Brown's death from Ferguson himself.

The directive came after a much calmer night despite white police shooting dead another black male only miles away.

Last week started violently after the pathologist hired by Brown's family revealed he was shot at least six times - including twice in the head.

Nixon was left no option but to call in the cavalry.

"Given these deliberate, coordinated and intensifying violent attacks on lives and property in Ferguson, I am directing the highly capable men and women of the Missouri National Guard... in restoring peace and order to this community,' Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said in an early Monday morning statement.

The situation appears to have calmed enough where the governor feels the Missouri Highway Patrol can handle any further protesting. Time will only tell if he is right.
