18 bodies found as Italy rescues 3,500 migrants

ROME (AP) - Italian authorities discovered 18 bodies in a boat of migrants Sunday as rescue operations went into overdrive this weekend, picking up some 3,500 would-be refugees at sea.

The navy said in a series of tweets Sunday that its Sirio patrol ship was docking in Pozzallo, southern Sicily, with 266 migrants and 18 corpses aboard.

Interior Minister Angelino Alfano renewed his demand for the European Union to relieve pressure on Italy, which has seen some 100,000 migrants arrive so far this year alone. The country says it spends 9.5 million euros ($13 million) a month to operate the beefed-up air and sea patrols that were launched after more than 360 migrants drowned off the Italian island of Lampedusa last October.

"Italy will make its own decisions" if EU partners don't offer assistance, he warned in a tweet.

The EU's home affairs commissioner, Cecilia Malmstrom, thanked Italy for its "huge efforts" to save lives and said in a statement she would meet Wednesday with Alfano "to better define priorities and provide assistance."

Italy: It might seem like you are doing the right thing by saving these people, but the Islamic baggage they bring with them will be your downfall.

This is now a permanent international problem.....the corrupt governments of all these nations in Africa, the Med East, and South America/Mexico, WANT their impoverished ignorant uneducated people to flee into the western countries. There is no way the Western countries can absorb these sad creatures without losing their own cultures.

And a second problem is the Muslim fundamentalist mentality that is invading with the refugee groups. If Europe has any sense whatsoever, they will reject any and all Muslims who try to enter in this way with no control over assessing individual people. Very sad.

The truly biggest problem all countries face is people like you. You have nothing constructive to say, no compassion or understanding of the issues-- just a fundamental and probably ineradicable insularity and xenophobia.

@ Kate - people like ridinggirl are the solution, not the problem. In no way has excessive immigration since 1965 improved the quality of life for middle class Americans. It's not a matter of xenophobia - it's a matter of numbers, and there are too many.

Kate---Neither insularity nor xenophobic fears are the issue. These Muslims will NOT assimilate to their new cultures. They will pressure their new cultures to assimilate to them. In doing so, they will be neither (your words) :--constructive--compassionate--or understanding. THAT is the issue and inevitable outcome if they are allowed to upset an already fragile balance. You might want to see the world once in a while without those rose colored glasses. Reality often sucks.

Kate, perhaps people are being insensitive in how they are expressing themselves but they all have valid points. You calling people names does nothing to contribute to the conversation.

Obviously, the western world cannot possibly absorb all of the tens or hundreds of millions of people who wish in emigrate.

The answer lies in improving the governments and economies of the third world. A tightrope act... the west cannot impose itself upon these countries, but the poor nations are unable to do it without help.

Money can help, but it is more of a structural problem that must be resolved first.

Meanwhile, we await your suggestions instead of your criticism.

The structural problem being what it always has been.
Utterly depraved and corrupt graft taking leadership, year in, year out, since we've been sending aid since the early 60's..

Italy has the right to ruin its own economy and corrupt its own culture by saving these immigrants and bringing them into Italy; or...

Most of the illegal aliens seem to be from Libya. Those who make it land in Italy but don't end up staying there any more than a Mexican will stay in Arizona where they crossed the border. They head north to places like Germany France, Sweden and Norway where the standard of living is high and they for reasons that have to do with correctness take them in and attempt to get them to fit in. It's kind of like here in the US where dumb and dumber seem to be running things. They should be capturing them on landing and putting them on boats or planes on a one way ticket home. I don't think any Americans have much room to speak out against this considering what we have let happen here. This may all change soon if ISIS sets off something big and opens everyone's eye's, but yet again 911 didn't seal the border so I doubt if even that will make a difference. Not many know that you can thank the prison system unions for a lot of this here. Just add up the numbers and see how much they make.

So sad our own people in America have not been able to wake up. They have been told over and over again what was happening all over the world., but no they think we have to take care of everybody. It is really disgusting and, so is your attitude Kate.
