Doctors Remove Baby Skeleton Left In Mother For 36 Years

Doctors in India successfully removed a baby's skeleton that had been left inside the mother for thirty-six years.

A team of doctors from the NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences in Nagpur operated on a 60 year old woman who had been complaining of stomach pains. For the last few months she had constant pain in her abdomen, and when doctors felt a lump, they feared it was cancer.

It wasn't until she underwent a MRI that they discovered it was a calcified skeleton. Apparently the Indian woman got pregnant in 1978 at the age of 24, but the pregnancy was ectopic and the baby died.

One of the doctors told the Daily Mail, "She apparently knew that the baby had died and that she would need an operation, and we gathered she got scared at the prospect of surgery and so went away to her village without undergoing the operation." That began, what is now being called, the "worlds longest ectopic pregnancy."

For those who may not know, an ectopic pregnancy is when a fetus develops outside of the uterus, generally in a woman's fallopian tube. The longest on record before this story was eighteen years, so this one is literally double.
