Doctors Remove Baby Skeleton Left In Mother For 36 Years

Doctors in India successfully removed a baby's skeleton that had been left inside the mother for thirty-six years.

A team of doctors from the NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences in Nagpur operated on a 60 year old woman who had been complaining of stomach pains. For the last few months she had constant pain in her abdomen, and when doctors felt a lump, they feared it was cancer.

It wasn't until she underwent a MRI that they discovered it was a calcified skeleton. Apparently the Indian woman got pregnant in 1978 at the age of 24, but the pregnancy was ectopic and the baby died.

One of the doctors told the Daily Mail, "She apparently knew that the baby had died and that she would need an operation, and we gathered she got scared at the prospect of surgery and so went away to her village without undergoing the operation." That began, what is now being called, the "worlds longest ectopic pregnancy."

For those who may not know, an ectopic pregnancy is when a fetus develops outside of the uterus, generally in a woman's fallopian tube. The longest on record before this story was eighteen years, so this one is literally double.

Nine months are way too long to be pregnant. 36 years????? I'm surprises she did not hemorrhage and die a very long time ago.

Apparently she came close. In the clip one of the doctors was explaining that she was indeed bleeding.

I agree. I can't begin to imagine what she felt like, having the skeleton of her dead child removed.

This is sad and disgusting at the same time. How could she not have the surgery even years later, instead of carrying these bones for so many years. Surprised she did not get sick or have infections. She was somewhat young and those foreign countries do things a little different than America. It must have been a big shock when she was told the truth.

Some areas are not the best for sterile conditions and/or competent help. I have live in a country where even routine cataract surgery was a sure way of being rendered blind by incompetent surgeons. Very few would risk it.

Terror of surgery and hospitals is not uncommon among illiterate people. They do not know anything aboiut sterile proceedures, all they know is their fear of being cut open, which they assume would be fatal, like somebody in their village getting stabbed in a fight.

Oh...I didnt see where it said she was illiterate or lived in a bad neighborhood. I will go back and read it again.

Wow! I wonder if she had children before this pregnancy. I wouldn't think she had any after this pregnancy. Apparently she did bleed had pain for awhile after seeing Dr. when she was 24 but left hospital and as time passed the bleeding stopped, abdomen size went down and pain subsided.

lucky she's alive. in many case an etopic pregnantcy will cause the tube to rupture and she bleeds to death or dies from blood poisoning or other complications

It grew enough to make a skeleton. Ectopic pregnancies frequently kill long before that process. It must not have been located in a fallopian tube. They can be fatal within weeks of becoming pregnant.

After carrying the child for 36 years, did she suffer from acute post-partum clinical depression following the procedure? Inquiring minds @ AOL want to know.
