Woman Remarkably Gets Up After Being Struck by Bus

Editor's Note: Some may find this video disturbing from 0:11 on. Viewer discretion is recommended

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Startling video was released Wednesday that shows a woman getting up and walking off after a bus hit her downtown. The accident is being investigated, but an ATA spokeswoman said it appeared a passenger distracted the bus driver.

Flashing ambulance lights added to the already, hectic scene in busy downtown Kansas City Tuesday afternoon. The ambulance was there for a woman had been smacked into by a MAX bus on the Troost route. Portions of the video show the bus striking the woman as she crossed 9th Street at Walnut.

Surprisingly, she's able to get up and walk over to grab what we're told was her cellphone. Video also shows several bystanders stop to help her.

'We checked the woman to makes sure she was okay. She was bleeding really bad from the back of her head, and the bus driver didn't seem like he was really even worried about it," Travon Miller said.

A witness who was riding that bus told FOX 4 he was able to see the victim, even though the driver likely wasn't.

"The operator was distracted by a passenger who had come forward to ask a question," ATA spokeswoman Cindy Baker said.

Indeed that's what the video shows, if you watch you can see a passenger walk up to the driver, just seconds before the bus made impact with the victim. However, this crash is still being looked into.

"Drug testing is one, substance abuse testing is just automatic protocol, the surveillance video will also be part of that assessment," Baker explained.

As the investigation continues, Baker says fortunately the outcome wasn't worse.

"Thankfully the operator was traveling at a very slow speed, or I think this accident could have been much worse," she said. "I was pleased to see that she was walking around after the incident."

Though the victim was walking and talking after the crash, she was taken to the hospital. No update has been given about her condition.

Black bus driver hits white woman, no a word on race. If it had been a white bus driver hitting a black woman, the news would make a point to mention it.

While driving and turning a corner, watch while driving and not turn your head from the road. Why did the driver had to turn his/her head? You don't have to look at the passenger to answer a question, that's what your ears and mouth are for.

The woman is also at fault if she crossed the street talking on a cell phone.. Look at her hand it is up to her ear. The video says she got up after being hit to retrieve her phone.

It actually does, you would be surprised what rights the city bus has, they can actually pull out in front of you from a stop and cut u off, you hit them and its your fault, beyond stupid but mass public transportation work with in there own laws. Plus if your a pedestrian and cross a cross walk with a stop hand sign you are at fault, if you dart out in to the street you are at fault.

How do you know if she didn't have the walk sign? The bus was turning the corner and just because you have a green light doesn't mean that you can proceed if the crosswalk is not clear. The driver should have never taken his/her eys off the road to answer a passenger, especially while making a turn.

Double fault here. The stupid pedestrian not being aware of her surroundings and doesnt even slow down or look either way to cross the street, and the driver for being distracted. Only the lawyers will make money on this one.

The world obviously revolves around this woman, and it was the bus drivers fault for not noticing she was taking care of business on her phone. She deserves to get a $1 billion settlement, and place the entire blame on the bus company, not the driver...because he doesn't have the money the company does.
