Police: 2 California boys planned school shooting

Teens Arrested For Plotting School Shooting: Police

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Two teenage boys have been arrested after making specific plans to kill three staffers then gun down as many students as possible at their Southern California high school, police said.

The boys, who did not yet have weapons but were trying to get them, had been under constant surveillance since the school district informed police of their plans last Thursday, South Pasadena police Sgt. Brian Solinsky said Monday.

He would not elaborate on the plans or what form they took, but Solinsky said they were "very specific" and included named targets.

"This is a prime example of school officials recognizing suspicious behavior," Solinsky said in a statement. "It was this information that helped prevent a horrific tragedy."

Police found evidence that the boys were researching rifles, submachine guns, bombs and other explosives, especially propane, police said.

"They were researching weapons and how to fire and assemble them," police Sgt. Robert Bartl told the Pasadena Star-News.

Enough evidence was gathered to serve warrants at the boys' homes Monday, Solinsky said.

One of them resisted, and police had to break into his house to take him into custody as he tried to run, Solinsky said.

'Potential Mass Shooting' Thwarted at California High School

The boys were both about to begin their senior year at South Pasadena High School in the community of about 25,000 people eight miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The school's first day of classes is scheduled for Thursday, and police had hoped to make the arrests before then, though they found no evidence of a date for a planned attack, Bartl told the Star-News.

Detectives had been working around the clock and monitoring the boys since the threat first emerged, Solinsky said. Relatives of both boys had been questioned, he said, but would not elaborate further on the investigation or the evidence.

The police chief plans a news conference Tuesday morning to reveal more details.

The arrests came the day after another Los Angeles County boy was arrested on suspicion of posting online threats to shoot students at local schools, though sheriff's officials acknowledged that those threats were intended as pranks.

Boy am I glad they were stopped before they could carry out their plan. I hope that every school in the country is equally vigilant, so these horrible killings stop.

You should ask yourself why these school shootings are happening then maybe you can post something that is substantial. Just stopping them is not getting to the root of the cause.

Hi August 19 2014 at 12:31 PM

As a Nation we are Godless, there are some of us still here that folllows Christ, but alot have put him on the shelf, they have forgot who really gives us our blessings and now look to the Goverment to get their needs met. I ask you is it worth it, everything around is evil almost these days. The liberals you have voted in and have been taking God out of everything and it's not good. People sure can go shopping for food, but they do not care to be fed the word of God. Wake up, Jesus is coming soon and no one wants to be left behind.

You can't tell me that the parents of these kids didn't know something was up long before the police got involved.

Teachers aren't allowed to disciline your child anymore. Teachers are more involved in your childs life then you are.

When I was in school teachers we're respected and feared and if you had to go to the principals office you felt like you was gonna stand before god and get judged.

They probably only communicate through text messages.

PLZ, no 'feel good counseling' before releasing them to kill at a later point. I can understand their parents' grief at losing their sons to a mental facility incarceration but would rather this than the untimely death of innocents and the resulting, and GREATER grief by each of their parents.

How dare you be so callous as to look at the problem in a reasonable manner. They just need hugs and a whole lot of publicity.

These kids were going to be seniors in high school. That is pretty close to being adults (I'm sure they'll be charged as adults). When I was in school if kids didn't like it or couldn't put up with some teachers or other students they just quit school. I went to school during the 1967 - 1968 riots. Let me tell you it wasn't easy but I tolerated what was going on, many of my friends couldn't and they just dropped out of school. No one threatened to blow away teachers or other students. What is it about the teens of today and the teens of yesteryear that is different? I'd say it on here but I'd get a lot of flack from those who "aren't affected by it". The majority of people think they aren't affected by something don't realize that a small portion of society ARE affected by it. We need to reign in a certain aspect of our entertainment industry and promote healthy alternatives instead. Nature walks would be a good solid alternative to video games.

Just another reason all criminals should be shown the business end of a wood chipper on their first offense.

These two morons will definitely kill someone in their lifetime if allowed to live. One can only imagine what other crazy things they do when not supervised.

Teachers are no longer able to discipline your child anymore. Teachers see and interact with your kids more than the parents do.

Ban Liberal Dementia August 19 2014 at 3:15 PM

After having my child in a California school - I an understand why the students are afraid to attend - not just South Pasadena - but ANY of them.... they are controlled by cartel gangs, English is the minority language and few if any classes are even taught in English. Drugs are as common as loose leaf paper and easier to get than an aspirin. The far left and unions have implemented the lunacy which prevails to permit such actions - and until they are tossed to the curb, the situation will continue to deteriorate.

I was born and raised in California. My sister and many of my close friends are teachers. What you say is made up nonsense. None of these teachers I know teach in schools that are as you describe. You are talk about your experience as though it is the norm and it isn't. You are generalizing in order to spread your anti liberal hate around.

I think liberals are nuts who can't see past their own self righteous noses. But then nuts are not monopolized by liberals as this poster proves. "Few if any classes are taught in English"??? C'mon get real.
