New US strikes in Iraq include land-based bombers

EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) - The U.S. has expanded its air campaign in Iraq with attacks aimed at helping Iraqi forces regain control of the strategic Mosul dam.

The White House said President Barack Obama notified Congress Sunday that the widened mission would be limited in duration and scope.

The administration's letter to Congress said "the mission is consistent with the president's directive that the U.S. military protect U.S. personnel and facilities in Iraq, since the failure of the Mosul Dam could threaten the lives of large numbers of civilians and threaten U.S. personnel and facilities - including the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad." It also noted that the failure of the dam could "prevent the Iraqi government from providing critical services" to the Iraqi people.

The letter said: "I am providing this report as part of my efforts to keep the Congress fully informed, consistent with the War Powers Resolution."

White House spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said the operations are being undertaken in coordination with and at the request of the government of Iraq.

The latest round of U.S. airstrikes in Iraq against the Islamic State extremist group includes the first reported use of land-based bombers in the military campaign.

Kurdish security officials say Kurdish forces, aided by U.S. and Iraqi airstrikes, have now taken over parts of the dam. Militants had captured control of the dam less than two weeks ago.

The U.S. military says U.S. forces conducted nine strikes Saturday and another 16 on Sunday. The second round of strikes damaged or destroyed 10 armed vehicles, seven Humvees, two armored personnel carriers and one checkpoint, the U.S. said.

But, but, but we're out of Iraq; we don't have any personnel there anymore. Obama promised!

Ever notice how Obama always tells the enemy exactly what we are going to do...they dont need spys, they have him. They know that if and when they ever invade Washington Obama will form a council and study the situation for a month before doing anything.

we will bomb them up to the point where it starts to be effective-then Obama will stop. This is all for show. The plan is to let radicals take over the middle east.

You must be very smart, knowing who is good on the other side of the world. And knowing who has the right to rule those lands and their oil. Thanks for your insight.

How do you take over "parts" of a dam? I'm no engineer, but aren't they pretty much one piece?

There is a bottom half and a top half. One lets water in the other lets water out. Simple, hey?

Obama should just go in with our forces and do the entire job once and for all without these piecemeal operations. How many more need to be killed, beheaded, women kidnapped and raped before it gets through to his thick skull that the ISIS need to be annihilated quickly and completely in Iraq and Syria. Just do it or we will see the ISIS on our shores before long.. In the meantime Americans keep supporting the right to bear arms and take your classes that are offered on how to use firearms as we all may need this information and guns to survive here in the future.

I'm a pathetic retired Marine,. We took the entire Pacific in WW II remember? The army was in Europe and there was no "Air Force." Oh, we never lost a battle, either. Iwo Jima was 5,000 pathetic Marines dead, 11,000 "heroic" Japs dead.

We could have done it right the first time if not for ROE. The Rules of Engagement can severely bind a military's warpower to the point that they become ineffective, which is what happened the first time around in Iraq, and also in Afghanistan.
