ABC News anchor Elizabeth Vargas returns to rehab

ABC Anchor Elizabeth Vargas Returns To Rehab

LOS ANGELES (AP) - ABC News reporter Elizabeth Vargas has returned to a recovery center to be treated for alcohol dependency.

The "20/20" anchor said in an emailed statement Sunday that she checked into a facility this weekend while on vacation.

She says she's committed to battling the disease and apologized for letting down her family and co-workers.

The network said in a statement that it supports Vargas and looks forward to having her return to ABC News.

Vargas announced in November 2013 that she was in rehab. She acknowledged in an interview that aired in January on "Good Morning America" that she was an alcoholic and it took years for her to admit it.

She said she had suffered panic attacks since she was a child and dealt with the stress by drinking.

First, alcohol dependency is not a disease. Second, for every 'action', there is a 'reaction'. Lastly, the weak simply choose alcohol.

Take care of yourself Elizabeth. Takes a lot of courage to admit you have a problem with alcohol and the fact you recognize you need help and are following through with treatment says a lot. Pulling for you lady!

Its because of nutjobs like you that our country is going to hell. It takes courage to have a brain and use it. This Vargas woman is just another liberal drunk you admire.

It IS an illness...and I hope she finds everyone behind her 100%. Didn't know of her addiction to alcohol until her first rehab experience...but, I will admit that I have always thought she is one of the better reporters today. Hope she finds a way to beat the disease she is fighting...Every day of living is worth the having, and the longer one goes without slipping, the better those days get. Best to you, Elizabeth.

Beautiful frequently refers to what's on the inside not just the outside.

When you are somebody, it is described as a disease (alcohol dependency), when you are no one, you are nothing but an irresponsible drunk and slush. Her employer probably gave her an ultimatum, "clean up your act or hit the door".

Hang in there Elizabeth, if you are stong enough to bear this to the public you are strong enough to contol it and set an example for others, best wishes.

Wishing her the very best. I suffer from anxiety and have tried several antidepressants (and therapy), but none have helped- yet. Must admit that a glass of wine does take the edge off. I am glad that she is getting the help that she needs and hope that she finds something other than alcohol (antidepressants, therapy, meditation, etc...) that will provide her some relief!
