Ukraine: Inspectors checking Russian convoy

By ALEXANDER ROSLYAKOV

KAMENSK-SHAKHTINSKY, Russia (AP) - Ukraine said its customs and border service officials on Friday began inspecting a Russian aid convoy parked just beyond its border, a sign that the two countries were taking steps to ease mounting tensions over the shipment.

Sergei Astakhov, an assistant to the deputy head of Ukraine's border guard service, said the cargo would be inspected in the presence of representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The group of 41 Ukrainian border service representatives and 18 customs officials began inspecting the Russian aid at the Donetsk crossing on Friday morning, defense officials in Kiev said in a statement.

Russian news agencies said Russia was prepared to present all necessary documentation and to hand over the cargo to the Red Cross.

The roughly 200 Russian white-tarped trucks have been parked since Thursday near Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, about 28 kilometers (17 miles) from the border. Much of the border in this part of eastern Ukraine has been under the control of the pro-Russia separatists.

Ukraine Awaits Clearance for Russian Convoy Check

Russia sent the convoy south after deciding not to abide by an earlier tentative agreement to deliver the aid through a government-controlled border crossing in the Kharkiv region.

Ukraine has expressed fears that Russia could use the aid shipment as cover for a military incursion in support of the separatists and threatened to use all means necessary to block the convoy if Ukrainian officials and the Red Cross were not allowed to inspect the cargo.

Adding to the tensions, a dozen Russian armored personnel carriers appeared Friday morning near the aid convoy.

Kiev sends bombs. Russia sends food, medicine and water. U.S. sends propaganda.

Russia sent terrorists that initiated the whole problem. The people in eastern Ukraine have been living together under the central Kyiv government since 1991, now in 2014 there all of the sudden is a problem? No, the problem is that Russia wants to dismember Ukraine.

This was a civil war,and neither the EU nor the Russians should have been involved in it. And Obama had no business even talking about it

It was NOT a civil war. It is an armed incursion and inserection sponsored by Russia to destabilize Ukraine and to eventually annex the provinces with the largest military / industrial manufacturing into Russia. It is alot easier for Russia to conquer and take what it wants versus developing it themselves.

Doesn't this remind anyone of the older age group of Germany, approx. 1939 when they spoke of peace & invaded Poland, France & my fathers country Czechoslavakia. Russia thinks that no one can stop them but lest they forget the divisions of Chinese troops on their opposite border & the combined military that they MIGHT face from the Ukraine side . I think Putin thinks that no one will make a stand against him & he will push his luck to far.

China just signed a 30 year Natural Gas importation Contract with Russia. And China paid Russia $20 billion to defray costs for Russian infrastructure improvements. China cares nothing about Western sanctions.

But China aldso thinks that Siberia belongs to it and has been slowly supporting the non-ethnic Russian majorities to seek their independence from Moscow. We were never told of the many battles China and Russia fought over the Amar River.

Hey Ukraine, Don't turn your back or blink an eye. Destroy those trucks where they stand. Nothing good can come from Putin charity. All he wants is to cross your boarder. Check all those goods for electronic devices and chemicals. If Ukraine deceides to accept those goods, be sure to bring Your trucks to Those trucks for unloading. Don't let them into you country. Who knows maybe their wired with explosives.

As of late WE have created civil unrest overseas. More so than Russia. WE armed the rebels that are slaughtering vast amounts of people.

Seems to me you could have put more supplies in every truck. All of the ones in the pictures are half full and those trucks can carry alot of weight.
