SAfrica: Honeymoon slaying suspect fit for trial

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - A British man accused of arranging the killing of his wife on their honeymoon in South Africa was on Friday declared fit to stand trial for murder after undergoing psychiatric observation at a Cape Town hospital.

Shrien Dewani is expected to go on trial in early October following a long legal battle during which he was sent to South Africa from Britain in April after years of resisting extradition amid claims he had mental problems. More psychiatric evaluations followed in South Africa, and the conclusions of a mental health panel opened the way for Dewani to face murder and other charges for the 2010 death of his bride, Anni.

"The accused is not mentally ill," the South African Press Association quoted prosecutor Rodney de Kock as saying in the Western Cape High Court. The news agency also quoted defense lawyer Francois van Zyl as saying he did not object to the finding.

Dewani appeared in court during the pre-trial hearing on his mental health. His family members sat in the gallery. He is scheduled to return to court for a pre-trial hearing in September.

Dewani's bride, Anni, was found shot dead in an abandoned taxi in the Cape Town area. Dewani is accused of hiring men to kill her and make it look like a botched carjacking. Three men have been convicted for the murder.

I don't get it. Why marry her and then kill her? Was she rich or something? To stand there and say "I do" while planning to kill her is cold, ice cold.

so what if he WAS mentally ill-if he did the deed then he is a murderer-no exemptions for murderers or sexual predator pedophiles.

In Japan, they rule that a person with mental problems is a mental patient but if that patient kills, then that person is no longer a mental patient but a murderer and subject to the death penalty. losing the status of mental patient. so, even if this turd is mentally unstable, He's held very much accountable and upon conviction receives the just punishment as if he were competent. Apparently, the three men convicted for the murder talked.

It would be nice if the article mentioned a motive.

This just in from the Taliban: Man should be able to kill wife at any time for any reason. She was bringing dishonor on him. She was not wearing her head scarf in public. She ate a piece of ham.....

Of course, Jeff. Pretty people are more important, you know that. (If she weren't pretty... - doesn't anyone know the subjunctive?)

To Jeff and James. Hell he just was stating a fact. And the fact is "she was pretty"! I doesn't have a damn thing to do with whether you should or should not kill based on beauty. Dang! For your information, Thou shalt NOT KILL ! And like many here said, "Why the hell marry her then kill her"! Damn, just don't marry her and go your own damn way!

This man was "sane" enough to hide his crime! The victim deserves & needs justice. Sentence this man to life in prison or put him before a firing squad!

The victim doesn't "deserve" or "need" anything; she's been dead for four years. Society needs and deserves justice, not you deciding his guilt before there is even a trial.

So often there is the easy answer - - - it was a Muslim thing, it was PMS, post-partum depression, or "mental illness." But why not call it is what it is - - the person is cold-blooded, a murderer, a sociopath, and who deserves to be executed or spend their life in a small person cell, with just as little sympathy or compassion as they had for the family members they killed. As far as this case, how mentally ill can you be if you marry someone and then immediately set about the task of finding people to kill your new wife, have them make it look like a botched car jacking, then flee back to your home country, and "act" sane for years, fighting extradition???? Sounds perfectly "sane"and "rational" to me. NOT the actions of someone with a mental illness.

"a Muslim thing" Do you know them? There names? Maybe you know them in person? How stupid of you to say that? I think this person is indeed insane for killing, but he should be accounted for it regardless where that insanity comes from.

Some people will try any excuse of getting out of a crime that they did. Perhaps he should have thought about the consequences BEFORE he did what he did.
