Los Angeles Residents Could Soon Get Cash For Voting

Some Los Angeles city officials are considering turning voter ballots into what would essentially be lottery tickets to increase voter turnout.

Los Angeles has had particularly bad voter turnout recently in local elections. Only 23 percent of registered voters cast a ballot in the last mayoral election.

Now the Los Angeles Ethics Commission is recommending the city council looks at implementing cash prizes to get people to show up at the voting booths.

The city council still has yet to approve the idea but the informal plan includes awarding $1,000 to about 100 voters.

Critics have already begun saying all this plan will lead to is an increase of uninformed voters who will randomly fill in ballots just to be eligible for the prize.

But a spokesperson for the Ethics Commission says that problem will fix itself:

"When you do have these types of systems people do end up educating themselves before they go to the polls."

However, a columnist for Los Angeles Times is not convinced. He writes that anyone who cares enough to educate themselves on the issues is already voting and this plan will only attract people "who need the prize money."

Right now the plan suggests getting the money for the prizes from the city's matching funds program, which gives funds to candidates who agree to certain spending restrictions.

But KCAL reports that voter approval is required to use those funds for prizes - that would "essentially be voters voting to reward themselves for voting."

And the Los Angeles Times points out it is illegal to award prizes to voters in federal elections, so this strategy could only be used when no federal measure is on the ballot.

It is illegal in California to use money to keep people from voting or getting them to vote a certain way but this plan should fall within the law so long as it does not attempt to sway voters.

If you pay a voter to vote, you are committing voter fraud. Nothing new to Dems.

So, this hopeless crime and drug, traffic choked Democratic ghetto is trying to "buy votes"? Is the city overwhelmingly Democratic? How is this Constitutional? Desperate and shameful beyond belief. And the Democrats complain about districts being redrawn?

after the first negro potus disappointed the world and supporters so devastatingly, many lib voters are justifiably reluctant to vote again for the much over-hyped, over-promising, and overly stupid democrat politicians that have made them a laughing stock. when giving free cell phones and promises of amnesty to ignorants, lazies, and gullibles in 2008 and 2012 worked so well for the libs, they are trying to ring them out of their low-inome project homes and slums to vote for the jive-talking lib party again, and to keep the morally and fiscally responsible Tea Party and some GOP from truly helping the country recover from near-bankruptcy the dems caused in just two presidential terms in office

You must be joking.
When a group has to pay people to vote, your doing nothing more than
sinking to the loeest common denominator of those that refuse to vote in the first
place, and in the long run it is probably better they sit it out.
An uninformed electorate caudeled and inticed to come out and vote for
money, is not an electorate at all.
Save your money and prizes, and let the people that keep up on politics and are
involved

This country has cancer. A cancer that disguises itself as money when in actuality it is debt. Debt that is created out of thin air by private international money lenders, disguised as a federal branch of our government when it's not. Then it's forced upon the common man and woman and their children and grandchildren as a means of exchange, lent and spent first by the government, then lent to us as credit, which we have to pay back with interest. Even though the interest on these loans are never physically created. So even if the American people somehow paid back all of the principal on these loans we could never pay back the interest which would be in the trillions, because the interest was never physically created. Does that sound like something that will ever work to you? Until the cancer is destroyed all of the other problems we face are just symptoms.
