Obama appeals for 'peace and calm' in Ferguson

By JULIE PACE

EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) -- President Barack Obama on Thursday appealed for "peace and calm" on the streets of a St. Louis suburb besieged by violent clashes between police and crowds protesting the shooting death of an unarmed teenager.

"I know emotions are raw right now in Ferguson and there are certainly passionate differences about what has happened," Obama said in his first in-person remarks about the tense standoff in the Missouri suburb. "But let's remember that we're all part of one American family, we are united in common values and that includes the belief in equality under the law, respect for public order and the right to peaceful public protests."

Obama, speaking from the Massachusetts island where he's on a two-week vacation, said there was no excuse for excessive force by police in the aftermath of Saturday's shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. He said he had asked the Justice Department and FBI to investigate the incident.

The president said he had also spoken Thursday morning with Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, who has faced criticism for not doing more to control the violence. Obama defended the Democratic governor calling him "a good man, a fine governor."

Police have defended their use of tear gas and smoke bombs to repel protesters, saying they took those actions to disperse a large crowd after some people threw Molotov cocktails and rocks at officers.

Yes everyone, lets have peace and calm. After all, if Obama had a son, he would surely look like Michael Brown.

And stop criticizing the "protesters". It is not every day they have an excuse to help themselves to new TVs, new kicks, and new tires, while simultaneously performing their civic duty to protest.

Notice Mr. Obama didn't mention the looting and burning by criminals. He is the most divisive President America has ever had. He has used race baiting comments, on numerous occasions, to further his political aspirations and now he tries distance himself from the divide he himself has help to create.

That is what Mayor Daley, Sr. did! When they (mostly black with some Hispanics) were rioting and looting, he came out publically and said that his police force was given the order to shoot looters on sight! END OF LOOTING!

Yes, bob, because shooting a kid with a rock is going to calm the situation down, isn't it? I'm guessing you aren't in law enforcement, or know anyone who is, or you wouldn't make such a stupid comment.

Mr. Obama has been by far the most divisive and partisan President in generations. He only occasionally refers to Americans collectively as "family" and rarely says positive things about our nation and millions of its residents. So much for the post-partisan/post-racial platitudes he spewed in 2008. If the President is not going to be consistent, then he needs to stay out of these situations. Stick to the fundraising, vacationing, "re-setting" (ruining) relations with other nations, hyper partisan rants and blaming everyone under the sun except himself for the many, many problems we face.
