New sleeping pill, Belsomra, approved by FDA

FDA-Approved Sleeping Pill Not Compared To Other Drugs

For people who have a hard time falling or staying asleep: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the approval of a new sleep aide that works differently from other drugs on the market, and the medication is called Belsomra. Approximately 60 million Americans suffer from insomnia.

"Typically sleeping drugs are a knock-out punch to the brain. ... think of a house where you get a surge and the electricity goes off ... so this drug is actually like a switch that turns off just the lights."

That switch being orexin -- a neurotransmitter that regulates wakefulness. Now that it's been approved by the FDA, it's undergoing review by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The maker of the drug, Merck, creates products for brands such as Claritin, Coppertone and Dr. Scholl's.

Before the FDA approved Belsomra, three separate studies with more than 500 participants were conducted. According to the FDA, those who took the drug fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer than participants who took a placebo.

But in a statement the FDA did point out a few things to consider, like safety. Because Belsomra was not compared to other drugs, it's not known whether it's safer than other sleep medications.

But, as with similar medications, there can be side effects like headaches, impaired wakefulness and performing tasks while not fully awake.

There's been no official announcement of a release date but according to Merck, Belsomra could become available as early as this year.

Well it's about time! America was running short of pills to take for made up problems! Try proper diet and the gym...although it's not profitable for Americas Pharmaceutical Drug Cartels.

eurasianmom, Ambien is the only thing that allows me to sleep for 6 straight hours. It can't possibly take a worse toll on me than sleep depravation. Have you ever gotten less than 9 hours sleep in 7 days? Trust me, it takes a toll on every aspect of health.

I have studied neurology for over 35 yrs. Most of the people on here are not educated in medicine and are expressing ignorant opinions. There are multiple reasons for insomnia in different people. Medicine only has limited options as the research continues. (Seven MDs in my family ....have spent my life around medicine.) I have seen people DIE from the torture of no sleep or rest. These people are ignorant. I am glad you have found an answer for you as far as medicine knows thus far. Good luck and rest to you .... ;o)

People, PLEASE STOP STUFFING YOURSELVES WITH CHEMICALS!!!
LEARN to go NATURE'S WAY! ..SEEK OUT HOLISITIC MEDS! IF one type wouldn't work, then find another, we ARE afterall ALL different! But plleease, STOP making pharmaceutical companies richer and richer by 'chemicalizing' yourselves ON AND ON!! STOP!
You all need to KEEP IN MIND TOO, that with (any type) of chemical use, your GENES BECOME ALTERED! (those little "computer chips" in your system that makes you uniquely YOU.) Start go ONLY THE HOLISTIC WAY. NATURE'S WAY, the way you were MEANT TO (seek and take), Mother Nature didn't create her herbs for us to take for nothing!! Pharmaceutical companies/LABORATORIES, have you BY YOUR THROAT!
