Woman learns husband is long lost brother

Woman Discovers She's Married To Her Brother

Adriana and her husband Leandro have been together for seven years and have a 6-year-old daughter together -- oh, and they're brother and sister.

Yup. It was a startling find for the couple as well. Adriana was given up when she was 1 and never knew her true family.

She went looking for her birth mother, Maria, and reached out through a Brazilian radio station that was able to connect her.

Adriana asked her mother if she had any other relatives. Sure enough, she had a half brother. And she was married to him.

Her mother had Leandro two years after Adriana with another man and also gave him up. The two knew they had a mother with the same name, but it was a common one so they never thought twice about it.

The couple told media outlets they're still committed to their relationship and plan to stay together.

We've seen some shocking couples who are a little too genetically close...

In 2012, an Ohio woman found out her husband was actually her father! She told the Akron Journal she heard rumors they were related but didn't find out they were true until 6 years after he died.

All adopted children should have their birth parent's information in their records and forwarded with them wherever they go. That would alleviate this kind of sad situation.

I am adopted, and I know I am not married to a relative by the way. They didn't know. They love each other - they did nothing wrong cause they didn't know - at least they have different biological fathers - their little girl is healthy - maybe they should consider not having more children in case of a genetic disease - but emotionally they were not related because they didn't know each other growing up. Except for passing on genetic disease - there is no problem here.

There's nothing left for them to do but immigrate to West Virginia.

It is something I think every adoptee thinks about from time to time ! And that is what happens with the lies of adoption and the people who get hurt with those lies !

Before engaging in relations, new couples need to do an AIDS/std test and wait for the results! Now-a-days, they need to do a DNA test to see how closely they are related! There are far too many out-of-wedlock births and the children being raised without knowing who their fathers or their fathers' people are. Adoption agencies need to keep records of adoptees' heritages and give them that info when they are of age. Even a test tube baby came from SOME woman's egg and SOME man's sperm. Most normal people DO NOT want to be in intimate relations with their father (or mother), brother (or sister), including half siblings, uncle/aunt, first, second, OR even third cousin! And if I learn after-the-fact that my husband is my brother, WE'RE GETTING A DIVORCE! Ignorance is bliss, but when you know something is wrong, CORRECT IT!

FRUOK - I agree 100% with your comment. This case is exactly why ALL adoption records should be open. The only people who are protected when records are sealed are the birth parents who don't seem to want to be bothered by the rocky and windy road their child(off spring) will be on for the rest of their life.
For-cryin'-out-loud, for once it would be nice if biological parents could think of someone else besides themselves. Yes, I'm a life-long adoptee who would LOVE to know my genetic background! !

This does not shock me at all. In a society where relationships and people are expendable this is going to happen. It's inevitable that if the majority of people sleep around and no one takes responsibility for the resulting off spring that eventually a few of these off spring are going to encounter each other, and without realizing the situation, they are going to link-up too.

In most states the marriage is legal because adoption replaces your blood line under most states law. religious law is a different matter. If they are going to stay together they should never let anyone know about it because people would judge them and their kids.
