NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans police say a 20-year-old man shot and wounded a friend and then killed himself inside a hotel at the edge of the French Quarter.

Officer Frank Robertson says the shootings took place Sunday inside The Westin on Canal Street. He says four friends were visiting from the Lafayette area and staying together in a room for the weekend.

Robertson says that at about 6:30 a.m., the 20-year-old man shot his friend in the chest. The two other men in the room fled to get help and a SWAT team was called.

After nearly three hours of negotiations, the 20-year-old man apparently shot himself to death and the SWAT team stormed in. The wounded 24-year-old friend was in stable condition at a hospital.

Police have not identified the men.
