Kansas teen wins first political race in Democratic primary

TONGANOXIE, Kan. -- He's only 18 years old and by all accounts, Austin Harris made history on election night. The Tonganoxie teenager and virtual unknown won his first big political race on Tuesday.

"It's exciting. We worked hard and we knew we had a shot at it, " an elated Harris told Fox 4's Robert Townsend during a follow-up interview on Wednesday.

Harris' "shot" at the Democratic primary in the 42nd District for the Kansas House of Representatives is now a sweet victory he, his family and his supporters are all celebrating.

"We said a lot of prayers before the election. The race was close at times before all of the numbers came in, so we knew it would be a very long night," said Harris.

The recent Tonganoxie High School graduate defeated Harold Fevurly, Jr. by a vote of 302 to 241. Harris, who's making education in Kansas his top priority, says he will take a new way of thinking to the state Capitol.

The young Democrat is now gearing up for what he calls "a tough battle" come November against Republican incumbent Connie O'Brien.

"I think we have shown that by winning the primary election that you can do it, and age doesn't disqualify you from being able to be elected or chosen to run or represent your people," added Harris.

Voters will have their say when they go to the polls for the general election on November 4th.
