Girl reunites with parents 10 years after being swept away by tsunami

Ten years after their daughter was swept away by a tsunami and written off as dead, an Indonesian family has reunited with their young daughter.

On December 26, 2004, an undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused a devastating tsunami that hit parts of Indonesia with waves up to a hundred feet high. It became known as the Boxing Day Tsunami.

Raudhatul Jannah, a four year old girl, and her 7-year-old brother were washed away when the water hit their home in the Aceh province. Her mother, Jamalia, says they slipped from her and her husband's hands as they held onto floating debris. After searching for more than a month, Jamalia assumed her two children were among the 230,000 killed.

But according to reports, just a few months shy of the ten year anniversary of the tsunami, an uncle spotted a girl that he felt looked exactly like Jamalia's long lost daughter. Turns out she had been living under the care of an elderly woman in a nearby district for the last decade. The girl was reunited with her family on Wednesday.

Jamalia told News.com.au, "My husband and I are very happy we have found her. This is a miracle from god." The story hasn't been verified, but the mother says she has no doubt that they found her daughter. Adding she would be more than happy to do a DNA test.

In what could be even more good news, the now 14-year-old Raudhatul told her parents that she believes her brother is also alive, as they were both stranded on nearby Banyak Island. The reunited family plans to search the small island.

This isn't the first missing child to be reunited with her family. Back in 2011, a 15-year-old Indonesian girl reunited with her family after being separated in the same tsunami. She tracked down her family after begging on the streets for years.
