Celebrities appeal to Scotland to stay in UK

LONDON (AP) - Mick Jagger, Dame Judi Dench and Stephen Hawking are among dozens of celebrities and public figures in Britain who have signed a petition appealing to Scottish voters to vote to stay in the United Kingdom in a referendum in September.

The public is now being invited to sign the open letter, whose other signatories include Helena Bonham Carter, David Attenborough and Simon Cowell.

The letter tells Scottish voters taking part in the Sept. 18 referendum that the undersigned "want to let you know how very much we value our bonds of citizenship with you, and to express our hope that you will vote to renew them."

"What unites us is much greater than what divides us," the letter said. "Let's stay together."

I think the people who favor staying in the UK are thinking that Scotland has oil or am I mistaken. Britain has been the source of all the problems with colonization all over the world and then partitioning areas in the Middle East which left Israel only a small piece of land. I hope the Scots don't listen to these celebrities like the Americans listened to the Hollywood people and voted for Obama and look at the mess America is in now.

Then they should toss Simon Cowell's severed head back over the border.

It baffles me! I know the history so no need to tell me how bad the English have been to Wales, Scotland and Ireland....but dividing them is not convenient for any of them.

It's not always about convenience, Jesuaphn. Sometimes it's about freedom, self-determination and simply doing the honest thing. And nothing is being "divided," Jesu; they're being made whole again.

Any voter in Scotland is crazy if they listen to these worthless celebrities and don't break away from their ties with England, something they should have done many years ago. Same with the rest of the countries in the UK.

What sober person would read (let alone sign) a petition with Mick Jagger's name on it? Turn out the lights in Edinburgh Castle.

My wife and I were in Scotland recently(we drove around the country for a week, staying at bed and breakfasts) and the majority of the Scots we talked to wanted to remain with Britain. I think William Wallace and Robert the Bruce are rolling in their graves!
