Giant ketchup bottle draws tourists in Illinois

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - For tourist Bruce Pasarow of Buena Park, California, leaving Illinois before seeing what's billed as the "World's Largest Bottle of Catsup" was not an option.

The Collinsville water tower is a depiction of Brooks Old Original Rich and Tangy Catsup, which was once produced in the buildings beneath the tower.

Now, the sign is for sale. Owner Larry Eckert is asking $500,000 for the 65-year-old, 170-foot-tall landmark and adjacent warehouse.

The 100,000-gallon tower never held ketchup. It hasn't been used since Brooks moved out in the 1960s.

Judy Demoisy helped save the bottle when it was in danger of being torn down in 1993. She says preservationists believe using it in a ketchup museum would be great.

"It's a global condiment," she says.

Very cool. It is a shame that the company went out of business.

Ironically, the writer spelled it " ketchup " and it is written as " catsup " on the tower. Did you know there is a 3rd way to spell ketchup/catsup ? Look it up !

Just one of many fascinating things to be seen along old Route 66, the "Mother Road".

Yep, and there's the 55 Roadside Motel in Joplin, MO. When they had the big tornado there it unfortunately got missed. It's tacky and nostalgic, but don't stay there. The guy lurking in the parking lot was reminiscent of Norman Bates.

Tourists are pretty hard up if it's all about seeing a big ketchup bottle. I bet they also journey to see the biggest ball of twine and biggest skillet.

Hardup? Some people do travel around this country to see oddities such as the biggest ball of twine, the biggest skillet etc. In regards to the Brooks Catsup Tower it may not mean anything to you but its an MEMORABLE ICON to the people who grew up in Collinsville area. And for what it's worth my girlfriend is from the Bellville/Collinsville area and she was saddened to see the Brooks tower up for sale. Throughout this country there are a lot of off the MAIN STREAM places that have things like the Brooks Tower they mean a lot to the people who grew up with those 'MEANINGLESS ICONS'. Your comment reminds me of one of my sister-in-laws "Who Cares" maybe not you or to her but it dose to those who cherish the childhood memories of a time gone past.

Excellent comment! It seems that all too many people are so egocentric that they think that the only things that are worth seeing or doing are the ones that they, themselves, want to see or do.

Ever wonder why it says "Tomato Ketchup" ? Because ketchup is a way of preparing fruits as a condiment.
You can make bell pepper ketchup.

I used to live near Alton and shopped in Collinsville and the catsup bottle is something that the city should keep, it's part of the history of the area. nothing wrong with having a little oddity here and there. The drug store in town sells souveniers of the catsup bottle. it's like seeing the windmills in Holland Michigan or any other oddball but neat thing to see on the road of life.

Weird "Rare Visions and Roadside Revelations" in Illinois. Don't forget to stop by Metropolis, IL that has, yep, you guessed it, a big statue of Superman in front of the court house. Lots of tacky souvenirs too. Oh, btw, they have a riverboat casino there too across the Ohio River from Paduccah, KY.

Was there 16 years ago and as most tourist we took photos of the kids standing in front of Superman. In regards to the casino boat, Unless things have changed, I have been to Biloxi, Gurlfport, Shreveport and the boats in Indiana across from Louisville and though the drinks were free we always tipped a dollar BUT the one in Metropolis CHARGED $2 period. Needless to say we did not order many drinks that visit--but we had good time.
