Small plane crash on Florida beach: 1 dead, 1 injured

Father Killed After Plane Makes Emergency Landing

SARASOTA, Fla. (Associated Press) - Authorities say a father was killed and his daughter seriously injured while walking on the sand when a small plane crash landed along Florida's Gulf Coast near Venice Beach.

Wendy Rose, community affairs manager for the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, said the pilot and one passenger weren't hurt when the Piper Cherokee landed Sunday afternoon. She said investigators, who originally thought one person was aboard, later determined the plane had two occupants.

Rose's statement says the girl was airlifted to a hospital and is believed to be in critical condition. She said the Venice airport originally alerted the sheriff's office to a pilot in distress, adding the plane was unable to return to the airport.

National Transportation and Safety Board investigators have headed to the site.

My husband is a pilot and he said he'd land in the water before landing on the beach and hitting someone.

Sounds just plain wrong.

I don't understand why the pilot didn't retract his landing gear and ditch the plane in two feet of water off the beach . its shallow for at least 50 yards off the beach and no people would have been hurt.. so the pilot killed a father and possibly his daughter all becoase he wanted to save his plane. big lawsuit coming.

The pilot is a murderer. He should put it down in the water, but to save himself he killed a family. What a bastard.

Talk about a freak accident.... The pilot should have ditched the plane in the gulf instead of endangering lives by trying to land on the beach. Very sad.

The pilot could have landed on the water near the shore. Instead, he opted to land on a beach with people. He should be arrested for manslaughter.

He should have ditched in the water less chance of a fuel fire. This gutless pig was showing off, the FAA need to hang him for everything he owns.

I hope there are man slaughter charges brought against the pilot. the plane should have ditched in the water (about 100 ft. out) not near swimmers and beach goers

Remember the days when a captain really was the last one off the ship? ...or when an honorable pilot would ditch away from populated areas? This pilot not only is a waste of a life, but manages to destroy another family. What is even worse, is that this pilot has likely reproduced at some point and passed their stupidity and self centered failures along to its offspring.

How hard did they have to work to a lone couple walking when the wide open ocean was next door?
