Nothing says "Americana" like the image of an auto mechanic in a grease-stained jumpsuit--even if, nowadays, the car he's working on is probably manufactured in Japan. While General Motors has been the subject of a bad-press overload in the wake of their product recall catastrophe, that's not to say there aren't plenty of great jobs at body shops, dealerships, and yes, large-scale manufacturers.
