Man dies in California after beach hole collapses

California Man Buried Alive After Digging Hole At Beach
California police are calling a recent college graduate's death a freak accident after he was buried alive at a San Francisco beach Monday.

Officials say 26-year-old Adam Pye and some of his friends just finished digging 10 feet into the ground when Adam jumped in the hole. Suddenly, the sand started caving in around him and Half Moon Bay beachgoers said they heard screams for help.

Dozens of people rushed over to help dig him out with whatever they had on them at the time but it took them 5 minutes to expose his head.

Then firefighters arrived and worked to get the rest of him out. Paramedics spent about an hour performing CPR on the unconscious man but they couldn't revive him.

Adam's parents told WALA they're devastated by the loss of their son who just graduated college and was taking a break before starting a new job.

His mother said, "That was all he ever did was just school, work and finally he graduated to say, 'Mom, finally, now I have some time, I can rest.'"

The city's fire captain only recalls one similar incident in the past 20 years.

Let's see he dug a hole 10' deep in soft sand and got in and the soft sand walls collapsed around him. I take it he did not get his degree in structural engineering.

So sad. A bright college graduate, and not an ounce of common sense. Do we need a law about digging holes in the sand?

Why would anyone want to dig a hole like that and then jump in. Not the brightest crayon in the box.

I'm confused on why they'd think it's a great idea to dig a 10 foot hole. That's literally a grave. It's unfortunate.

Digging holes in the sand is something that little boys and girls do with little pails and little shovels. NOT for grown men and women with brains. How stupid!!!

I wonder why out of all those kids, this particular one jumped in.
How could everyone keep their mouths shut when they saw them digging this hole?
This is not the first time this has happened.
Very sad.
