Coroner: Heroin overdose killed Peaches Geldof

LONDON (AP) -- Model and TV personality Peaches Geldof died from a heroin overdose after relapsing from a battle to give up the drug, a British coroner ruled Wednesday.

Coroner Roger Hatch said Geldof took a fatal dose of high-purity heroin shortly before she was found dead at her home south of London on April 7.

An inquest heard that Geldof - daughter of Live Aid organizer Bob Geldof - was a heroin addict and had been taking the drug substitute methadone for more than two years in a bid to stay free of the opiate.

Her husband, Thomas Cohen, told the hearing that Geldof had started using heroin again in February. He said he had seen her flushing drugs she had hidden in the loft of their home down the toilet.

Cohen found her body when he returned from a weekend away with the couple's 2-year-old son, Astala. Their younger son, 1-year-old Phaedra, was in the house with his mother.

Peaches Geldof Died of Heroin Overdose

Police found heroin and syringes in the house. A forensic scientist said the drug had a purity of 61 percent - much higher than the average drug sold on the street.

A pathologist told the inquest that Geldof's blood contained a high level of heroin, along with traces of codeine, methadone and morphine. There were puncture marks on her arms and legs.

Inquests are held in Britain to determine the facts in sudden, violent or unexplained deaths. The coroner's conclusion is a sad echo of the life of Geldof's mother, Paula Yates, who died of a heroin overdose when Peaches was 11.

"It's said that the death of Peaches Geldof-Cohen is history repeating itself, but this not entirely so," the coroner said.

"By November last year she had ceased to take heroin as a result of the considerable treatment and counselling that she had received.

"This was a significant achievement for her, but for reasons we will never know prior to her death she returned to taking heroin."

People are soooooo damn stupid. She was born to a famous family with money and could have done any number of positive things with her life, but she chose to become a junkie.

I fail to see what the allure of illegal drugs is. Why are people so attracted top something that is well known to be so destructive. It his sheer stupidity to use them.

God DAMN addiction! I am not swearing. I am asking Him to damn it. Satan stole another life. Addiction is a sad, painful downward spiral. I see people making comments, such as, "She could have done so much more..." It's true, but you need to understand/comprehend the true nature of addictions. It's an evil, lying thing!

I'm curious as to why her husband left her alone for the weekend with a 1 year old when he knew she was using drugs. Seems irresponsible and dangerous.

Really sad when the entire article seems to focus on her struggles with drugs, her attempt to get clean, her "significant achievement"...sickening! Then, her little boy gets bascially an add on comment.."he was in the house with his mother". Way to go Mom, nice of you to get high and then die with your helpless little son with you! Disgusting.

Getting clean from addiction has to be the one think you want more than anything else. She most likely should not have had a child. She was not ready to stop. So, it killed her.
Unfortunate for her child at the very least.
Some people don't have what it takes to get out of those addictions..just like a 600 pound person...food is what they live for...same for drugs....alcohol.....It's the way it is.

These 2 little boys are now without their mother. How very sad that she did not continue to get help and save herself from dying. I am sure her children will never understand this. So very sad. I guess her heroin was her answer to a better life. She probably never understood why her mother did drugs either.

It is increasing difficult for addicts to remain clean when:
They have had a parent addicted.
They are in the entertainment "industry" where there are the extremes of adulation and anonymity.
They have used heroin or other opiates.
They have grown up in our ever increasing narcissistic society.

Drugs are the ultimate selfishness. And that wound to self, real or imaginary must be continually addressed for treatment to succeed.

That said, it is a pity that her mind (rational self) couldn't persuade her impulses to get high. While it is an addiction, it is the power of the rational mind that avoids shooting up, one day, one hour, one minute at a time.

And there will still be hundreds, thousands out there who use and say to themselves, "that won't happen to me--I can control it." Such denial is prescient. One is only in control of free-falling until the abrupt conclusion. That person can accurately declare, while plummeting unchecked to earth, "So far, so good."
