World's biggest sharks find a new home

Whale Sharks Making Big Move

The biggest fish in the sea is taking to new waters.

The whale shark can reach more than 40 feet in length and weigh up to 47,000 pounds!

But these massive beings are actually quite harmless, compared to their smaller relatives like the great white.

They use their thousands of teeth to catch only tiny creatures in the water for food.

The gentle giants prefer warmer waters - between 79 and 86 degrees - which is likely why they're being found around the Azores Islands, an area in the central North Atlantic where nine volcanic isles sit.

Researchers decided to look into why the sharks were frequenting the islands more often with the help of tuna fisherman - because whale sharks almost always carry a school of tuna underneath them.

They studied whale sighting over a 16 year period and found a significant rise in 2008 when it was exceptionally warm. More sharks were also sighted around the southernmost region of the islands which has higher water temperatures.

This lead experts to believe the sharks are seeking new waters because of rising sea temperatures caused by climate change. They plan to continue their research to see if the amount of food or mating also plays a role.

Love how HP makes every article political by claiming even the sharks follow the "climate change" what a joke! Weather changes, it's the nature of weather, DUH! How arrogant to think man makes that big of a difference.

Your ignorance is showing. First of all, climate change is happening, you can deny it all day and twice in church on Sunday.

In October of 2011 the planet reached a mind bending population of 7 Billion. That's and increase of 5 BILLION since 1960. You are really going to sit there and think that that kind of an increase on the resources of this planet won't cause change? Come on, you can't be that ill-informed or poorly educated, then again maybe you can be.

What happens when the earth goes into its ICE AGE which it has done twice before ?? DOLT

The Azores are volcanic islands along the Mid Atlantic Rift. If the waters are now warmer there it is likely due to more volcanism warming the waters in that spot. If temperatures were rising globally, and according to the IPCC global temperatures have been flat far 17 years and therefore NOT warming, the Whale Sharks would not need to travel to find warmer waters.

Water temperatures are NOT flat world wide, and even if they were, a lack of rising degrees in many areas can be directly linked to the melting of ice caps. That is literal ice water that is being added to seas and oceans.

Certainly some waters are naturally warmer than others due to volcanic activity, but if temperatures were indeed not rising globally, there would be no way to account for the melting taking place.

No your right they even COOLING in some places and FLAT in others like the poster said. SOME places have gotten hotter by 1 degree. Please the get the global warming BS out of your mouth

"This lead experts to believe the sharks are seeking new waters because of rising sea temperatures caused by climate change. " Does anyone see the irony in this statement after reading the preceding paragraph about them preferring warmer waters?

Rising AIR temps are leading to glacial ice melt on an unprecedented level. That ice melting is cooling area's of the ocean and having that cooler water mix into ocean currents creates cooler temps in certain areas of the ocean. These sharks are looking to get out of the cooling habitat they are in and moving to warmer area's as a result of the global temperature rising. There wasn't that easy to understand. Easy experiment, set a tray of water in the sun and take it's temperature. Now set a chunk of ice in the same tray and as the ice melts take it's temp near the ice chunk and then the far side of the tray.........now do you get it. We did this in the 3rd grade. Science is fun, you should try it sometime.

UMMMM what about the Glacial ice GROWTH of up to 40% ????? it has moved to the other side and you like to niwits like to completely forget about that. Look at this site right here no no dont go to the other side forget about the other side only look right here. We don't care that it is growing bigger on the other side only that it is shrinking here. Dolts the lot of you

because whale sharks almost always carry a school of tuna underneath them.
Someone needs to tell them to drop the tuna, Charlie, and get a bag of ice.

If the whale shark prefers warmer waters, then he/she/it ought to be free to travel to warmer waters. After all, "to each according to his need" has always been the mantra of the climate alarmists...

This doesn't make sense, if global warming is raising the temperature of the oceans then they would not need to seek warmer water. Maybe the oceans are really cooling and forcing them to seek warmer water. Maybe global warming is a hoax!
