Charlie Hunnam talks about leaving 'Fifty Shades'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- The first trailer for the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie will be released this week and the original Christian Grey, Charlie Hunnam, says he can't wait for the finished product.

Speaking Sunday at a Fox event as part of the Television Critics Association press tour, the 34-year-old actor said he still believes in the film although he's no longer a part of it.

"I'm just really excited to see it. I was just really, really invested and wanted to work with (director) Sam (Taylor-Johnson) and play that character. I'm really, really curious."

Hunnam went on to say it's not fair to dismiss author E.L. James' writing as so-called "mommy porn."

"I think people really do that book a disservice when they reduce it to that type of talk," he said. "What (E.L. James) actually created is a really sophisticated dynamic and presented it in a package which was accessible to people who normally would be terrified of that subject ... Actually what she did was pretty brilliant."

The "Sons of Anarchy" actor dropped out of the big-screen adaptation one month after it was announced he had landed the role of the billionaire Grey, a sexual "dominant" with major baggage who falls for an innocent college coed (played by Dakota Johnson.)

Universal Pictures and Focus Features said Hunnam's preparation time for the movie was limited by his TV schedule. He was replaced shortly after by actor Jamie Dornan.

Hunnam admits walking away from the part was "pretty heartbreaking."

"I don't think people have had unchaperoned access to me since all of this went on ... the CliffsNotes were exactly what we said. I couldn't do it because of (the) schedule. It was as simple as that."

The actor even said he would be willing to have his audition tape be included as a DVD extra for curious fans.

Hunnam says Dornan is "probably a lot better looking and a lot smoother" than he is.

"I would've brought a certain rugged charm to (the role) but believe me, he's going to do just fine."

"Fifty Shades" is scheduled to open on Valentine's Day in 2015.

He is deluded or perhaps illiterate. That book was drivel. The only mildy interesting thing about it were the emails between the two characters. The writing was sophomoric.

Oh, please. The guy is hot to look at, and his shallow performance on Sons of Anarchy is adequate, but now he's doing the PR thing for a job he quit before even starting it?

Big fail.

Charlie, when the movie comes out, no one will be talking about YOU. You can spend the down-time working on that strange half-New Yorker, half Londoner 'American' accent you never quite got down. hint: native Caucasians of the San Joaquin Valley don't sound anything like that....

The only thing "brilliant' about Fifty Shades is the authors ability to get away with completely ripping off the Twilight Series. She took what fans wanted from Twilight (more sex) and took it to a completely different level. There were even lines in the book that were verbatim from Twilight (Edward's coloring, clumsy Bella, and Jacob the best friend); all similar characters. Stephanie Meyers should have sued her it was so blatant, but then she would never have read such crap. Out of curiosity I read this series and it wasn't even well written. Any woman who bought into this had no self-respect or brains. It was laughable!

I never wanted more sex out of Twilight. Then again, I'm not one of those crazy fans, either.

I would never read this crap though. Don't need to read it to know there is nothing great about it. Everyone likes it for the sex, that very fact proves I'll hate it.

This originally started out as a fanfiction of Twilight which is why it's so similar. She ended up changing a few things so it wasn't EXACTLY Twilight...

Whyyyy are people still hounding him about not taking this role?! I never wanted to see this garbage in the first place, and now with the constant drilling of it into our psyches, I really don't want to see it.

I'm a guy so I don't know if he's good-looking or not unless you like a guy who seems to take a lot of showers on SOA yet still comes out looking greasy.

Only an idiot would pretend he couldn't tell if anther guy is good-looking. You must be seriously insecure about your masculinity to say something so asinine.

Charlie is not only gorgeous and talented, he is a good man! Looking forward but sadly to the final season of SOA!

What is so "heartbreaking" about being so busy doing a TV show that you don't have time to do a movie? Really. Dissapointing perhaps, but not "heartbreaking." For example, while I am dissapointed with your poor use of the english language, I am certainly not "heartbroken" about it. Get a grip on reality or at least learn to speak english.

imo-The book wasn't all that. Can't see why they'd even consider a movie. Lotta hype for a less than mediocre work.

If daddies would be more attentive to mommy's "needs" - there would be no need for "mommy porn" books & movies, and on the flip side - if mommies were more attentive to daddy's' "needs" then daddies wouldn't stray, and mommies would not need to seek out these romance novels and porn fantasy distractions, to replace what "should have been" alive in the marriage in the first place!

Holy tripe!!... what BS. My man knows how...and so do I. ....and after 40 years we still enjoy it ALL 5 or so days and nites a week. Only stereo type TV 'Mommies" seem to be constantly lacking.....including you it seems. Wow... read the first book...barely able to stomach the 'packaged' 'sexual' faux BS lit.... Read like a bunch of Ex Cosmo writers met the frustrated VIEW clucks.
Middle America is soooooo much better than this. Stop this ignorant hype.... the books suck. Have zero interest in the movie. Or this clown who wishes he 'was'...whatever the lead dork in Shades will call himself. wow. Tripe defines it.
