UK court orders 'Glee' name change in legal row

LONDON (AP) -- Glum news for "Glee" - Britain's High Court ruled Friday that the musical TV show must change its name because it breaches the trademark of a chain of comedy clubs.

A judge told Twentieth Century Fox that it had to re-name the series in Britain, though the order won't take effect until an appeal has been heard.

The studio was sued by Comic Enterprises, which operates a string of venues called The Glee Club.

Judge Roger Wyand ruled in favor of Comic Enterprises in February, saying there was a "likelihood of confusion" between the two brands.

Fox said it would appeal, and argued that ordering a name change would be unnecessary, unfair and disproportionate.

But the judge concluded Friday that "Glee" had to go.

"I find it hard to believe that the cost of the re-titling and publicizing of the new name would be so prohibitive compared to the value of the series," he said. "I was told many times during the course of the trial how this series is a `blockbuster.'"

The judge said it was possible the Court of Appeal would take a different view, so he put the re-naming order on hold until appeal judges have analyzed the case.

Comic Enterprises is also seeking damages. The judge said the final amount would be determined later, but ordered Twentieth Century Fox to make an interim payment of 100,000 pounds ($170,000).

so wrong... "glee club" is a generic term used by pretty much every high school in the english speaking world.... furthermore, NO ONE is going to confuse a blockbuster musical tv program with a bunch of sleazy comedy clubs - and they're ALL sleazy... 2nd dingbat UK ruling i've read in the last five minutes....

How 'bout a show callled "Honey". Ooops, no, Honey Comb cereal. Flash. Ooops no, Flash Dance. Fast. Ooops no Fast and Furious. A show called "Lost". No Lost in Space, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Our judges, and those in the UK, have lost their minds.

Glee is still on the air? Wow. I honestly think that is the single worst show I ever saw. I can't believe it is still going.

What about Seinfeld, The Office, and The Drew Carey Show for a few? I wouldn't even watch The D.C. show because of how they portrayed Mimi. Augh. P.S. I love the talent and choreography of Glee.

Stop broadcasting in England. This judge has his head up his ass. Glee and The Glee Club are separate names. The cost is insane to rename after 5 years. Give up Britian and move on. Let the British go to The Glee Club clubs instead.

Never watched Glee and probably never will. However, the word Glee is generic and can't be owned or should not be owned by anyone. This is a stupid judge with a stupid ruling. How could anyone confuse a comedy club with a TV show? Brits must be really, really dumb!
