Siegfried & Roy welcome 3 snow-white lion cubs

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Magicians Siegfried & Roy are welcoming three new snowy white lion cubs to their Secret Garden habitat on the Las Vegas Strip.

The 14-week-old felines were born near Johannesburg, South Africa, and brought to the Mirage casino three weeks ago. They will be available for public viewing starting on Friday.

The cubs are named Freedom, Madiba and Timba-Masai, and have rare white coats after inheriting their parents' recessive genes. They are expected to weigh 500 pounds each when they reach their full size in two to four years.

Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn discontinued their magic stage show after a white tiger named Mantecore attacked Horn during a 2003 performance.

But they continue maintaining the Secret Garden zoo, which features white tigers and white lions.

For all you bleeding hearts......the mortality rate for lion cubs is 80%......only 20% of lion cubs ever reach maturity......it's even lower for white lion cubs......trust me, they're much safer in the zoo.........

a bad idea to breed these kind of lions, they should know better, doing it for themselve, not the animals

Where does it say they bred them? All it says is they came from South Africa

If you read the article you would know that the Magicians did not breed them, they came from South Africa. While I would rather see them in their own enviormet, they will live longer in the show. No preditors!

I am appalled at the ignorance of so many people commenting. These gorgeous cubs will NOT be safe in the wild. They will constantly be in danger of being brutally slaughtered by hunters for their coats, and even a high possibility of being rejected their own kind. Their coats lack camouflage, which makes them an obvious target for larger predators until they are fully grown. As someone who has actually been to South Africa, I can tell you first hand how bad the poaching problem is. Even in sanctuaries like Kruger National Park, hunters are still finding ways to subvert protection efforts and killing animals. These cubs might as well have a huge red target on their backs. These cubs are going to have a great, happy life with Siegfried and Roy. They are going to be loved, spoiled, treated with nothing but kindness, and have a beautiful habitat to roam around in. In the wild, they don't stand a chance.

They named a caged lion Freedom? What's that you say Freedom? You want them to bring back stage shows? I'll drop a note in their suggestion box for you.

Siegfried and Roy are the ones that should be kept in cages. This is a barbaric practice.
