Are the Wizards preparing to make a run at Kevin Durant?

By SAM SPIEGELMAN
XN Sports

The free-agent frenzy that was the summer of 2014 saw LeBron return to Cleveland and 'Melo remain in New York. In 2015 we could see Kevin Love finally change uniforms, and in 2016 all eyes will be on Kevin Durant.

The reigning NBA MVP will be an unrestricted free agent in 2016, and one team may already be preparing to make a run at him.

According to the Washington Post, the Wizards hired David Adkins as a player development assistant. Adkins was a member of Brenda Frese's coaching staff at the University of Maryland the past five years and the longtime assistant coach at both Maryland powerhouse prep schools, DeMatha Catholic and Montrose Christian.

Why is that relevant? Durant played his high school ball at Montrose Christian. Perhaps adding his former coach to the Wizards' coaching staff will make Washington a more attractive option when Durant becomes a free agent.

With John Wall and Bradley Beal as two young, up-and-coming stars in the backcourt, as well as Marcin Gortat manning the center position, the Wiz could be one of the better fits for Durant if he decides to leave Oklahoma City.

When he's a free agent, Durant will only be 28 and will likely be in line for a max contract. Currently, only Wall and Martell Webster are under contract through 2016, while the Wiz hold a club option on Otto Porter Jr. Beal will be a restricted free agent.

Washington seems to be in a good state financially to make that kind of pitch to Durant.

For now, let's consider the Thunder the favorite to retain Durant. But also factor in that the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers will likely be in the mix to try and land Durant. New Knicks coach Derek Fisher played alongside Durant with the Thunder the past two seasons, while the Lakers will be gearing up for the post-Kobe era.

Hey, 2016 is only two summers away.

If he goes, it's not guaranteed that he'll win a championship anywhere else. He would have to earn it just as he would if he stayed in OKC.

if the sixers weren't so cheap or stupid they would go for love and build around him but nooooo they want draft picks to stock up on guards.i don't watch the nab anymore because its fixed entertainment.how does cleveland get two number ones in back to back years and then get lebron back?why hasn't noone questioned this?it was just like in the 80s and 90s where houston and san anyone were racking up the premier centers.the west got the all stars and the east got the workhorses.the east won and played defense and the west got the guns or shooters.the nab now stinks.

With AS and AB contracts finish next year we are talking about 30Million $$$$. KD would be a VERY nice fit for the KNICKS. Here is your 2016 lineup
CA and KD at the forwards Cole A at the center THjr and SL at the gaurds
The Bench will be strong. The Knicks will have a 10 man rotation which is very deep but needed in todays game.

He will be leaving OKC because it's OKC. See Charles Barkley. The other thing he will say is OKC had a chance to go all the way before they got cheap and decided to let the beard go to Houston so why should he wait around to se what they will do next....Get outta town!

What does Charles Barkley has to do with anything? The players do not give a hoot about what he has to say. He is not relevant to their lives. They choose to navigate their own lives. And that is their right.

Its a long way till this guy is free. Teams will do nothing until than holding money in the hopes of getting him? That would mean no improvement for the teams for two seasons? The Knicks and the Wiz need improvements now, not in two years. Also there is two drafts before he is available meaning spots he could play on any team could very well be filled. Doesn't seem logical to me. Sounds like media just looking for a story now that Lebron and Melo have signed.
