Shipwrecked Concordia floated successfully

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) - The shipwrecked Costa Concordia was successfully refloated Monday in preparation to be towed away for scrapping, 30 months after it struck a reef and capsized, killing 32 people.

Authorities expressed satisfaction that the operation to float the Concordia from an underwater platform had proceeded without a hitch. Technicians were preparing to shift it some 30 meters (yards) and then anchor the massive cruise ship before ending the day's operations.

The entire operation to remove the Concordia from the reef and float it to Genova, where it will be scrapped, will cost a total of 1.5 billion euros ($2 billion), Costa Crociere SpA CEO Michael Tamm told reporters.

The heavily listing ship was dragged upright in a daring maneuver last September, and then crews fastened huge tanks to its flanks to float it. Towing is set to begin July 21. It's about 200 nautical miles (320 kilometers) to Genova and the trip is expected to take five days.

"The operation began well, but it will be completed only when we have finished the transport to Genova," Italian Environment Minister Gian Luca Galletti told reporters Monday.

Concordia's Italian captain is being tried in Tuscany for manslaughter, causing the shipwreck and abandoning ship before all were evacuated.

The salvage company milked the contract for every penny and tens of millions more. If that ship had been required to be salved from the exact same situation in WWI... 75 years ago with 75 year old technology, it would have easily been done in 2 weeks for 1/1000th of the equivilant cost (including adjustment for inflation) As I read it, the ship is to be scrapped anyway and could have been MUCH more simply cut up on the spot. A matter of a few weeks at most. It could have easily been finished and long gone, nearly a year and a half ago. Someone is a fool with their (or more likely someone else's) money.
A lot of those over 50 out there know exactly what I am talking about.

It is consistently glaring in nearly every story (except gossip) that the AOL / Huffington Post Staff is exceptionally lacking with regard to any technical understanding on everything they report. Today they report this 1-1/2 year fiasco without questioning the clear misappropriation of salvage funds... as if nothing is wrong here. Yesterday they had a story with "Grad Missiles" (Grads are short range unguided rockets fired nearly aimlessly in clusters). The inaccuracy and lack of depth and grasp is consistent here.

This is still a critical phase. They're still worried her bottom will fall out since the hull has deteriorated, and she's full of water below decks. It isn't going to be a tedious week-long process to tow her the 160 miles to Genoa.

Thick steel plate does not "deteriorate" significantly in 1 year or two. Don't know where you get your facts but it sounds as if you work PR for the salvage company. This was a very straighforward and easy salvage... shallow water, non-moving, partly above water, close to shore, no live munitions aboard. They had nothing to worry about except draining combustible (not flamable, not explosive) oil from the fuel bunkers, which were not leaking. It is a bilk, clear and simple. Many readers see through this con-job.

go back an look an read on how they rasied the west virgina tennessee california nevada at pearl harbor only the oklahoma took more time an that was cause she had turned turtle had capsized an they had fuel ammo an heavy ordance on board most heavy ships have hull plating in excess of 3 to 4 inchs thick plus their coating of red lead an concret ballast

Amazing Engineering feat. Raising that ship (full of water & everything else) is just unbelievable? We had a space capsule return to earth into the ocean and they couldn't retrieve it because of the water weight? Just amazing! I would love to watch it being towed and follow it through the final stages. Great job.
