Clippers trial put on hold past Tuesday deadline

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A trial that could determine the fate of the Los Angeles Clippers was delayed Thursday until after a deadline to conclude a $2 billion sale - and a scheduled NBA vote on the deal - but there is hope for more time.

Donald Sterling has vowed never to sell the team and he's trying to block his wife's single-handed deal with former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Attorneys for Shelly Sterling have accused his side of stalling tactics.

Superior Court Judge Michael Levanas put off the next hearing until July 21 because two of Sterling's lawyers had plans for a vacation and a wedding anniversary. He set closing arguments for July 28.

That's well past the expiration of Ballmer's offer next Tuesday - the same day that the NBA is supposed to vote on it - and there is no deal without the judge's approval of the sale.

Ballmer's lawyer, Adam Streisand, said outside court that there's a provision to extend the deadline another month as long as progress is being made in court.

However, it leaves the team's future dangling.

If the sale isn't completed by Sept. 15, the league has said it could seize the team and put it up for auction.

Shelly Sterling testified Thursday that she took on the role of selling the Clippers because the NBA had banned her husband from the league for life for making racist remarks.

Sterling said she believed that her husband wanted to sell in order to keep the NBA from confiscating the team.

"Every day, he would ask me, `Who did you interview? What did they offer?' I would give him a report every day," she said.

Ballmer's offer - which would be a record for an NBA team - was the highest of four offers she obtained.

"I thought it was fabulous," she said.

Donald Sterling told her "he was very happy and proud of me," she said.

But what it came to signing off on the deal at the end of May, everything changed.

"He started screaming and cursing at me," she said. "He said he's not going to sell the team. He's going to sue the league."

Mrs. Sterling also said she feared players and sponsors would boycott if her husband held on to the team.

Donald Sterling contends that his wife had no right under a family trust that owns the Clippers to single-handedly make the deal. Mrs. Sterling contends she had the authority.

In earlier testimony, two doctors hired by Mrs. Sterling to examine him declared that the 80-year-old had Alzheimer's disease and was mentally incapable to act as administrator of the trust.

In his own testimony Tuesday, he alternately declared his love for his wife of 58 years with tears and then demeaned her as a woman intimidated by the "bad NBA" and incapable of handling such a large financial transaction. Before taking the witness stand, he kissed her.

But on Wednesday, he yelled "get away from me, you pig!" when she tried to approach him after her first day of testimony.

She is a miserable manipulative broad who sees dollar signs and she doesn't have to wait for him to drop dead to get. This case is a travesty and Sterling should have never had to get involved like the public made him for exercising his 1st Amendment rights and he assumed he was speaking privately. This country has gone to seed. Sterling earned the American dream through a lifetime of work and our lousy society wants to take it away from him.

Bigots deserve no respect. Neither do those scamming others to become obscenely wealthy.

If calling someone a pig makes you mentally incompetent ,I guess that makes the 75% who called Sara Palin that name mentally incompetent .That may explain why all those Demoncrats vote the way they do.

It does not take a judge to see that Donald was railroaded by his wife. And, who are these doctors? Their licenses should be suspended, at the least. He is no less compenent than any 80 year old. Even now with his wife trying stabbing him the back..and all the haters in news and sports press (who call Donald a hater) blasting him, he is understandable, witty, and strong willed. If true justice prevails Donald will prevail.

It take an objective individual to understand the complexities of the case. According to your post, that isn't you.

"Don't support any "sponsers"". Stay in school, learn to spell and perhaps you'll gain a measure of credibility.

The "trial" is a farce. The NBA should
fine the guy and move on. I don't condone racist attitudes and statements. But confiscating people's property on the basis of their statements is a step way too far.

Obviously, you do condone racism. All you demanded was a light tap on the wrist for contract and US Constitution civil rights violations.

Sterling owns nothing but incorporation pieces of paper with a team name. He has to lease franchise right to use the NBA logo. He contracted with NBA not to humiliate NBA and demoralize the teams, and that exactly what he did. Thus, violating the team name owner franchise contract. Without that logo attached to the team name, that team doesn't play in a league. Sterling is responsible for every player contract until expiration date. The players are not going to tolerate being unable play league pro-ball. NBA is not going to tolerate a banned owner still owning the team name. If NBA doesn't force an auction, the players will. Best to voluntarily sell the team name to someone able to honor NBA contract and the US Constitution.

OK, where are you on Jay-Z wearing a 5 Percent Nation medallion to an NBA game? Its racist, and (ahem), therefore offensive. and should not be condoned---right?

Mrs O “For the first time in my adult life I’m proud of my country”. That PUBLIC statement wasn’t offensive and racist towards nonblacks? It sure wasn’t first lady like. I wonder if she is still so proud?

Stop comparing apples to oranges.
The two cases are never the same. There is no racial utterances attributed to Mrs. Obama's statement. You are talking about a man who made a vituperative statement against blacks, yet, he looks at them in every game, laugh, giggle and behind the scene calls them devil. This is the same guy who called his wife a pig during trial.
What a guy? I mean, this guy is wild with diarrhea mouth, with uncontrolled trash coming out of his mouth and feels too powerful about his money and boast about it too "I can double Steve Ballmer's bid" ."I can flaunt $10 Billion over this Clippers deal" - who cares!. There is no good investor that would pass the kind of deal on the table for the sale of Clippers. This is a lifetime opportunity that would never come back Clippers if missed. Selling a team that never won any championship for $2 Billion? that's a gold mine.
BTW, I don't feel pity for this guy.

Donald Sterling is a Zionist brat and litigating bully. That is how he lives his whole rotten life. This is why he can not take the slapping down from this scandal. He can only give it out. He can not take it back. He does not recognize any rules and faults in himself. He only sees himself as a snotty nosed victim.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. These racist white boys egos are way too large to fit into their racist pig headed sculls.
I just loves how mother nature smacks their racist asses down and they are helpless to do anything about it...karma is good every and all the time. Justice will prevail.
