News photographer attacked with his own tripod

Crazy Video: News Photographer Attacked With His Own Tripod

GLEN, WV-- West Virginia photojournalist Bob Aaron got the beat down from one of his subjects -- with his own camera tripod.

Aaron was filming Howard Lilly's property on a public road, chasing a story about alleged animal abuse. That's when Aaron says Lilly went after him -- and he was able to catch it all on camera!

Aaron's leg has some cuts and bruises, but he's expected to be okay.

"I said, 'I can't believe this is happening,'" he said. "He just kind of went crazy there for a minute."

Aaron's camera? Not doing so well. State troopers say Lilly confessed when they questioned him.

"He was very remorseful," a trooper said. "He was in tears in there ... he just said that he didn't want his family disgraced by being on TV for something they haven't done."

If he had acted like a rational person he could have been interviewed for his side of the story.

SO NOW HIS FAMILY CAN BE DISGRACED FOR WHAT HE DID AND IT WAS ALL CAUGHT ON FILM. TOO FUNNY. STUPID IS, STUPID DOES!

What, pray tell, was stupid about the reporter? He was simply following up on a legitimate story on a public road when the man came after him wielding the tripod, which could have injured the reporter badly. Lilly should have just asked him not to film without permission (though permission isn't needed when you're not on someone's property) and asked to have a conversation about the story and his side of it. You don't attack someone like that, in any case.

The reporter wasn't even on Lilly's property but on a public road, and he has a right to take pictures from there. He didn't "stick the camera" in Lilly's face at all, but was attacked without warning, and was lucky to avoid serious injury. Why didn't Lilly just ask him to listen to his side of the story and then agree to have pictures taken if there was nothing to see?

I agree Mike the reporter was a little pushy they don't have enough sense to leave when ask.

I didn't hear Lilly ask the reporter to leave or to stop using the camera or to listen to his side of the story. He just grabbed the tripod and attacked rather viciously. He's lucky the reporter wasn't really hurt.....if he'd struck the reporter's head there could have been a serious wound.

If you don't do anything wrong why worry. If you don't want your family embarrassed, don't do anything wrong. If he did nothing, tell his side. Only guilty people should act guilty

That's not true. He wasn't acting guilty, just didn't want to be on camera and accused without fact of doing something wrong.

So rather than offer an interview or just tell his side---he decides to correct it by, in fact, doing something wrong? His solution was to assault someone and make things much worse? Now he'll have an even harder time convincing people that he doesn't abuse his animals regardless how innocent he may be. People are now wondering "If he can be this irrational and aggressive over someone taking pictures--what would he do if an animal misbehaved? How would he react if a dog urinated on the floor?"

His claim that he didn't want his family disgraced on TV for something they didn't do makes no sense. Now they're disgraced on TV for his behavior and the family's innocence is will be harder to prove.

You're a good friend for standing up for them, but even you have to realize how badly this altercation will affect their case. And, BTW, fwlrcj said "Only guilty people SHOULD act guilty" that doesn't mean innocent people don't. Put your claws away and thank about it.

Battery; damage to personal property ... and by the way, your own property is not private and anyone, any time can take pictures of it from public view.

How about invasion of personal space? That is done daily by our government with all their spy satellites, etc.

We DO have a right to a certain amount of privacy guaranteed in the constitution "... pursuit of happiness."

Only egotists and exhibionsists revel in being the point of everybody's attention, the rest of us would like to be left alone!

How would you like it if you knew someone was in public view as you call it was looking through your window all the time with a telescope?

The reporter was scarcely looking through the man's window with a telescope, but was merely following up on a story to see if there was truth to the alleged animal abuse. He might well have found there was, or was not, any abuse, but being attacked in that way doesn't help the landowner much. He could have asked the reporter to listen to his side of the story rather than attacking him like that. He could easily have hurt the man badly.

Animal abuse?,pt him and his whole sicko family in jail I am sure they knew what was going on and no one put a stop to it. The camera man can defend himself these animals couldn't.

That's what the reporter was trying to do, find out whether the abuse was real or just alleged (which means it could be true or perhaps not, but was worth looking into.)

What on earth does liberal or otherwise have to do with this event? The man was wrong to attack the reporter and was lucky not to have injured him seriously. A request to listen to his side of the story might have made a big difference, but he couldn't possibly do that, it seems.
