Visitor trapped in Chicago jail for about 30 hours

Man Trapped in Jail Visiting Room for More Than 30 Hours

CHICAGO (AP) -- A visitor to Chicago's Cook County Jail was trapped inside for about 30 hours over the July Fourth weekend.

WBBM-AM reports a man was in the jail's maximum security division visiting his son when he went into a room that wasn't being used. The room's door was propped open by contractors installing cameras.

Jail Executive Director Cara Smith says the door closed, locking the visitor inside from about 6 p.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Monday.

Smith says the man pounded on the door, but its thickness muffled his efforts. The man drew attention to his plight by breaking a fire sprinkler head to summon the fire department.

Smith says investigators are trying to determine why the door was open and why no one noticed the man hadn't checked out.

Gee. Nobody noticed he hadn't checked out because people take a clue from our current administration, where nobody does his job and there are no consequences for NOT doing it.

More evidence that over paying public employees doesn't give you better workers - it just gives you more over-paid, under-performing idiots! Someone should be terminated for this, but nothing will happen! Typical!

Does the term "gross incompetence" bring up a mental images? Wanna bet they charge him for the water damage?

I wouldn't be mad about it— why the hell did the guy go in a cell in the first place?

He did not go into a cell, read it again or go back to the third grade!

He went into a room because he was told by authorities it was a place to wait for your visit to begin. Little did he know...

We know somewhere, somehow you committed a crime sir, we're just bypassing the courts and police and locking you up, no pass-go, no get-out-of-jail card.

I can answer that question--- because they are a bunch of ignorant and irresponsible Mow-rawns

All involved should be fired!

He didn't get out-- that's pretty maximum security.

I know what you mean, though; the fact that nobody even knew he was there is pretty eyebrow raising.

He was yelling a good deal more than that, and nobody heard him.

Lucky he made it out. In Chicago the only ones that get out are the dems convicted of a crime
