Paramedic delivers baby on his own birthday

Paramedic Delivers Baby on His Own Birthday

SPRING HILL, Kan. -- It's rare for a paramedic to ever deliver a baby. It's even more rare to bring someone else into the world on your own birthday.

FOX 4 reports: It was just before 5 a.m. on June 29 when Lieutenant Rick Jordan got the phone call. A woman had gone into labor quicker than expected.

"I think my wife's having a baby!" said Stephen Morrison on the 911 call recording.

Lieutenant Jordan, one of several Johnson County medics, rushed to the Spring Hill home of Brooke and Stephen Morrison.

"Her water broke only about 20 minutes before we got there, so it was really very fast," said Lieutenant Jordan.

"I woke up around 2:30, just normally to go to the bathroom like you do when you're 41 weeks pregnant, and got back in bed and I started having a little bit of pressure, and a back ache, and that was really it," said Brooke.

Brooke said around 4 a.m. it got strong enough that she was breathing through contractions.

"I woke my husband up at 4 and I said, 'I don't know if it's real yet or not, but let's get ready to head to the hospital. So we both called our moms," she added.

Her water broke at 4:15 a.m.

"I was like, 'I'm just going to sit here until your mom gets here, get the car ready.' I'm like, 'he's crowning,' and he's like, 'do you want me to call the ambulance?' And at first I was like, 'let's wait one more second,' and then I could feel the head. 'Okay, call the ambulance!'" she said.

"If she has a desire to push, she can do that, but what we want her to do is try not to and just have her take slow deep breaths okay?" said the 911 dispatcher. "Okay, slow deep breaths, baby," said Stephen on the 911 call.

Stephen called 911 at 4:43 a.m. and dispatch talked him through it until the paramedics got there at 4:50 a.m. Baby Wyatt was born at 4:56 a.m.

"It didn't even dawn on me until after the ambulance had left and I was driving back to the station. Then it was like, oh hey, it's my birthday!" said Lieutenant Jordan, "That's sort of weird!"

June 29 was Lieutenant Jordan's 56th birthday. He's been a paramedic for 30 years and has only delivered four babies, including Wyatt.

"I would have sang to him, it's probably a good thing that I didn't know, he doesn't want to hear me sing!" said Brooke.

The Morrisons came to the fire station in Spring Hill Monday to meet with Lieutenant Jordan and the rest of the Johnson County medics to thank them for their help.

"He has an uncle that he shares a birthday with, and then one of Spring Hill's heroes!" said Brooke. "So I said we'll make sure Wyatt knows that."

Baby Wyatt is perfectly healthy and weighed seven pounds and 11 ounces upon delivery.

I see another coincidence... 7 lbs. 11 ounces... must be connected to the 7 Eleven store.
