Utah officer who killed family used service weapon

Officer Family Killed

By Brady McCombs

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah police officer used his service weapon when he killed his wife, two children and his mother-in-law before turning the gun on himself in January, authorities said Monday.

An investigation completed by Spanish Fork City Police was unable to determine Lindon police officer Joshua Boren's exact motive, Lt. Matt Johnson said. But investigators did learn Boren, 34, and his wife were having marital problems.

Toxicology reports from the autopsy show Boren had no drugs or alcohol in his system, and he had no history of violence or mental illness, Johnson said.

Police said the state medical examiner confirmed what investigators believed: Boren shot his wife, 32-year-old Kelly Boren; his 55-year-old mother-in-law, Marie King; and his two children, 7-year-old Joshua "Jaden" and 5-year-old Haley, before killing himself.

The shooting happened at the family's home in Spanish Fork, a city of about 37,000 located 50 miles south of Salt Lake City. The events stunned the community, as well as friends and family, said Johnson, who added investigators didn't find anybody who suspected Joshua Boren was capable of such an act.

Family and friends said Joshua Boren and his wife had been separated for some time and had reached a point where divorce was likely, Johnson said. There were no reports of physical violence, but Johnson said, "They just hadn't been getting along for several months."

Though he wasn't living at the house, friends and family said Joshua Boren still came every morning to get the kids ready for school and preschool, Johnson said. He also picked them up every afternoon.

"He was praised as being an excellent father," Johnson said.

It's unknown if the Borens discussed custody of the children, but investigators found no evidence to suggest Joshua Boren would not be able to see his kids. They also found no suicide note.

"We don't know exactly what sent him over the edge," Johnson said.

Joshua Boren had worked for the Lindon Police Department for only three months when the murder-suicide occurred. Before that, he was a Utah County sheriff's deputy for seven years, Johnson said. The Lindon department counts about 15 uniformed officers and patrols a city of about 10,000.

Friends and family said Kelly Boren, who was finance director for the city of Bluffdale, was a sweet, funny woman dedicated to her family.

Jaden was remembered as a "rough and tumble boy" who loved frogs, bugs and karate but had a soft side. Haley loved princesses, dressing up and telling stories, loved ones said.

This is a special kinda Freak. I do not condon anyone killing "self" and esp innocent victims. I dont care who gets angry at what I'm about to say, but I'm going to say it anyway. He should have killed himself FIRST. Not the innocent kids, the wife or the grandmother. This is a sick puppy--Good riddings!

We need to take the guns away from people like this! No cop should have a gun because they are unstable people. We see it time and time again. Keep guns away from cops and many innocent lives will be saved every year.

The headline for the story on AOL made it sound like something truly "shocking" had been found. That an officer used his service weapon to kill is not the shocking part of this tale. Not to put too fine a point on the writing here, but, what other weapon would he most likely use? It would be more "shocking" if he didn't use his service weapon.

Just because he lived in Utah, we don't know if he was Mormon. So with nothing more than complete speculation on my part, I would humbly suggest that if he was LDS (Mormon) and had his marriage sealed in an LDS temple, then his firm belief would be his family would be with him throughout the eternities. If his wife had decided to request a cancellation of that sealing he would then firmly believe in his faith and mind that he would be without his children and his family forever - denied for all of eternity. If you strongly believe that, and most active Mormon's do, it's enough to put you over the edge. BUT AGAIN, this is just speculation on my part. Either way, it's a terrible tragedy that will impact good people in a bad way for generations to come.

The only shocking part to me is this officer would take his kids out as well. I can't comprehend a man once sworn to duty & performing that duty with any kind of integrity at one time turning to this kind of violence to resolve an issue. The mind is a fragile mechanism with the capacity to do the exact opposite of what it once considered "normal". Ask me why I pack heat & will continue to do so regardless of what the law says. This man represented the "law",, I rest my case..

Yeah, Morons have issues, they put such strict cult beliefs on themselves they just snap. Many Morons just turn into druggies and Drunks, trying to drown away their shame they were brain washed to feel about themselves because they have thoughts all humans.."nice ass".."OH I LOOKED AT AN ASS! I'M GOING TO BURN!>>BURN!!!"
