Gary police officer found shot dead in patrol car

GARY, Ind. (AP) - A Gary police officer was found shot to death Sunday in his patrol car and a person of interest was taken into custody, authorities said.

Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield was found dead about 5:45 a.m. after a citizen called police and reported an officer bleeding in his car, police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King told The Associated Press.

Westerfield, whose 47th birthday was Sunday, was pronounced dead at the scene in a residential area about a block south of Roosevelt High School, officers said.

Police Chief Wade Ingram Jr. told the Post-Tribune that investigators took the person of interest into custody about 3 p.m. Sunday. No charges were announced and a motive for the shooting wasn't immediately clear.

Ingram said Westerfield had responded to a call in the area where he was found dead a few hours earlier.

The last Gary police officer killed in the line of duty was Patrolman Benjamin Wilcher Jr. whose car crashed during an August 2007 pursuit.

Sam Abegg, president of the Gary Fraternal Order of Police, said he worked with Westerfield for five years when he was in patrol and that everyone loved working with him.

"He was someone you wanted to have there with you," Abegg told the Post-Tribune.

A police officer dies in the line of duty. Where are all the civil rights group? When some punk ass criminal gets beat up or killed ******** like Al, Jesse, MAPA, ACLU and the like come out in defense of the scum bags pleading excessive force. These scums are no where to be found when a law enforcement officer gets hurt or killed. RIP Sir!

From the looks of the house they are probably dirt bags. I hope they are put to death if found guilty. Police never know what to expect on a call. RIP!

There's only one suspect, the others in the house were just taken in for questioning and will probably be released tomorrow. The guy who did the actual shooting just ran to that house afterwards. But he's gonna pay. We still have the death penalty here.

Let me go out on a limb here. Inner city blue district, Strongly Liberal Democrat, voted for Obama twice and are receiving "entitlements" and I don't think they are crackers.

My thoughts and that of our staff go with this family. Every cop knows that death is just a few feet away at all times....too bad that he did not kill his attackers or at least one!

I can understand that you misspelled your handle, considering that the "b" and the "n' are right next to each other.

What I am wondering is if he was answering a call do they not have to radio back in when they are finished so they can be accounted for so something like this does not happen. It is possible that he could've been saved if he received medical treatment. Seems like he was there for some hours before being discovered.RIP and prayers to the family

That makes no sense. Every cop car is equipped with GPS so I doubt he was "on a call" or idle for several hours without knowing the whereablouts of his vehicle. What I don't understand is in Gary there should always be two officers in a vehicle.

Our cars are not equipped with a GPS, and he was in fact on a call. Alot of times a call can take over an hour, and we do check in when finished. The person who shot him was in fact shot by another person, and while he was running away (it was his girlfriend who shot him) he shot the officer in the head twice as the officer sat in his car.

FU and the horse you rode in on. I'm sure you would be singing a different tune if you had an officer in your family and he was murdered.

I do not think that Boss Man Tim would shed a tear if anyone in his family was murdered whether they were in LE or not.
