Brazil striker Neymar to miss rest of World Cup

By Tales Azzoni

FORTALEZA, Brazil (AP) - Brazil's team doctor says Neymar will miss the rest of the World Cup after breaking a vertebrae during the team's quarterfinal win over Colombia.

Neymar was kneed in the back by Colombia defender Juan Camilo Zuniga in the second half of Brazil's 2-1 win, and was in tears when he was carried off the field on a stretcher.

He was taken to a local clinic and team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said after the match that the star striker had broken his third vertebrae.

Neymar is the Brazil's biggest star and has scored four goals for the team so far in the tournament.

Brazil plays Germany in the semifinals on Tuesday.

God please bless him. Nobody should be happy about this, I don't care whose team it is. This kid could have been paralyzed.

Zuniga should have been red carded. He made no attempt for the ball. One of many cheap shots by him during the game.

The referee was a joke. He did not control the game, gave no penalties. It got rougher and rougher on both sides. There is no excuse for what Zuniga did though and he should be suspended. AND FIRE THE JOKE OF A REF for allowing that sort of play.

Transferrd, EXCELLENT comment. Yes, fire that JOKE in a referee's uniform. When was he last TRAINED, or passed a proficiency exam? This was a WORLD CLASS game; WHY did FIFA allow an unexperienced "ROOKIE" to referee such an IMPORTANT match? For that matter ALL the matches are IMPORTANT!! Treat the players and teams appropriately. They give their BEST; give them THE BEST!

Brazil has been playing fairly dirty, perhaps this is what happens when the other team finally has enough.

If the "3rd (cervical) vertebra is broken then he should have been immoblized before being carried off.

My prayers go out to Neymar and his family. I hope that he can recover from this injury. So sad that the refs can't penalize for improper play, but I wonder if they have lined their pockets with bribes?

Referrees that allow the game to go on without issing any cards on fouls that are fragrant that deserve yellow or red cards should not be allowed to referree any other international matches. It is time that FIFA takes drastic actions to protect the players who have given so much to the game.

John & Maria, you are right! FIFA is a JOKE insofar as selecting officials for this game. This is WORLD LEVEL, for gosh sakes, FIFA, pull your head out of your butt, and GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER! You did NOTHING good for World Soccer today FIFA!

"Referrees that allow the game to go on without issing any cards on fouls that are fragrant "

The fouls that are fragrant (adjective - having a pleasant or sweet smell) I don't mind so much as those fouls which really stinky & smelly!!! But even the best REFEREES have problems being objective about whether a foul is fragrant or putrid, thus it's only their opinion when ISSUING a card. lol

This should have been a yellow card at the very least. Neymar was a target for physical abuse from the Colombian team. Shame on the man who inflicted this injury. Bad sportsmanship to say the least.

That's one thing I've never gotten about "soccer" vs. American football. There are parents that think American football is too dangerous for their "precious litle darlings" so they push them toward soccer. But soccer has just as many injuries. The headers where heads make contact with other than the ball. The kicks, both accidental and intentional. But at least they learn to act, in American football only kickers pretend to be hurt if an opponent comes within 5 feet of them, seems like all soccer players do the act.

Is there any sentiment for soft helmits for soccer players?

Parents (and many kids as well) really know the difference and also the dangers, but prefer soccer for a number of reasons. Smaller and lighter kids can play where as in many football leagues smaller kids are excluded. It also creates much better overall athletes who have better stamina than most football players. I played both and also refereed. Many football players could not even be a decent ref on a hot day! As for acting, you must have missed all those late in the game "injuries" in the NFL!
