Lightning strikes One World Trade Center in NYC storm

By Dan Mennella

A fireworks display on July 2 may be a bit premature for some, but Mother Nature apparently couldn't wait to get the show started in Gotham on Wednesday.

A strong thunderstorm rolled through New York City around 8 p.m. ET, bringing an ominous and spectacular display of lightning, dark clouds and heavy rain. The incredible scene, which included an apparent direct lightning strike at the top of One World Trade Center, was caught by several cameras and photographers, whose pictures quickly made the rounds on social media.

A great series of before, during and after pictures was taken and posted on Twitter by New York-based photojournalist Gary Hershorn, who came away with similar shots of NYC under assault by a storm in May. One of Hershorn's pictures from Wednesday's storm was retweeted over 1,400 times and favorited over 700 times within two hours after it was published:

Should you see any fireworks that matches or beats this scene, it will have been a great holiday.

Odd... the lighting show in Chicago the night before was 10 times more impressive regarding the power of nature than the one AOL is describing for NYC... yet they didn't say one word about it on AOL. Neither did NBC, CBS, ABC or any what is considered as MAIN STREAM media - based amazingly in NYC.

Do people not understand that is normal.
That is why they put a rod at the top.
DUH

The point is not that buildings as tall as 1WT have lightning rods on them (DUH, we all know that), but that it's spectacular when they work.

Got a problem with beauty and the awe inspiring power of nature?

I would say that the people who died on 9/11 aren't too happy with the new World Trade Center.

Growing up in Southern Mississippi we often had storms such as this in the summer. Bolts from the lightning would touch the ground with a boom. These storms would also hit homes at one time or another. I now live in California we have had storms but nothing like the one in New York City. When it has rained here we will have flash floods. I remember one time when it rained so hard our drive way was over ankle deep. We live in a mobile home park. Folks here aren't use to the wet streets so when they drive on a wet street they go the faster speed limit and when they put the brakes on their cars start sliding every which way and many accidents happen.

Thunder storms are so rare in So. Cal. that a number of years ago, our nephew (born in Ca.) wanted to go outside under a tree to watch the storm. Of course, no one would let him do that.

Sure. The induced current from a strike wouid obliterate the camera.
