Around 30 migrants found dead on boat near Sicily

ROME (AP) - The bodies of some 30 would-be migrants were found in the hold of a packed smugglers' boat heading to Italy, the latest deaths in a surge of immigration to Europe, the Italian navy said Monday.

The boat was carrying nearly 600 people, it said. The remaining 566 survivors were rescued by the navy frigate Grecale and were headed to Pozzallo on the southern tip of Sicily.

Overall last weekend, the navy said it rescued more than 5,000 migrants, adding to the nearly 60,000 people who have made their way to Italy since the beginning of the year, compared with 42,000 in all of 2013.

Most are African or Middle Eastern refugees who pay hundreds or thousands each to smugglers in Libya who pack them into unsafe fishing vessels. Officials say the numbers have swelled this year due to increasing instability in Libya.

The estimated 30 corpses were discovered in the bow of the boat during the rescue, according to a navy statement. The victims were believed to have suffocated or drowned.

In a separate sea rescue operation, navy officials isolated a migrant suffering from an infectious disease but did not identify the ailment.

Italy beefed up its sea rescues last October after a migrant boat capsized off the Italian island of Lampedusa, killing more than 360 people. Italy says the European Union needs to shoulder more of the costs of the rescue operations and will use its EU presidency starting Tuesday to press its case.

Italy says it spends 9.5 million euro ($13 million) a month to operate the sea and air patrols.

The EU's home affairs commissioner, Cecilia Malmstrom, said Monday the commission was preparing a plan to dismantle the smuggling networks at their origins and was making 4 million euros ($5.5 million) available to Italy in emergency assistance.

we were on an Italy vacation back in 2007, I couldn't believe the graffiti in rome, at the coliseum and at several place throughout the city. I asked the tour guide what the deal was, I said it looks like the Bronx. he said all illegals coming over from north Africa, have no respect for anything. sadly it's the same problem all over. every civilized country in this world is soon to be overrun, if we're/they're not already.....disgusting

So many West Africans have infiltrated my town. I read about them in the paper often. It's usually about some crime they have committed or shady dealings. You also hear about the amount of assistance they receive from the government and how their benefits outweigh those of US citizens in need. It boggles the mind as to why we allow this to continue.

All countries should shut down their borders and not allow anyone to come in. Hopefully illegal aliens will stay in their own countries and attempt to make them better.

Who cares about 600 illegal immigrants in Italy? The American people need to know about the 60,000 illegal children coming across the border with more expected.

Problem is there is a lake at the border where they get on jet ski's and rid them over to the US side of the lake, get off and walk into the US without anyone saying one word to them.!!!! WHY hasn't someone send our people down there to stop this?? We had one American get shot and killed there a few years ago because he got to close to the Mexican side. So they know what is going on. OUR GOVERNMENT IS BLIND TO WHAT IS GOING ON. THEY Don't CARE.

Reading some (most) of these insensitive comments toward the loss of life is just sickening. Spoiled rotten American teens should all be packed on a boat like this and set afloat for a few days so that they have an understanding of what it is like to NOT be a spoiled American teen (and young to middle age adults of the "ME" generation). What a crap load of useless kids we have raised. But not to worry, they will lose their country and their freedom....because they take it for granted and EXPECT to live for free and just play video games all day....wish ya luck with that.

It would seem that people all over the world are trying to escape violence. The true test will be whether we treat them humanely or we let them die or kill them. God I think, is watching.
