Costa Rica beats Greece in penalty shootout

Costa Ricans Celebrate Historic Win

RECIFE, Brazil (AP) - Costa Rica beat Greece in a penalty shootout Sunday to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time after defending with 10 men for nearly an hour.

Michael Umana scored the decisive penalty as Costa Rica won the shootout 5-3 after the game ended 1-1 following extra time.

Greece's Theofanis Gekas saw his penalty saved by Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas for the only miss in the shootout.

Costa Rica will play the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

Costa Rica had taken the lead early in the second half through captain Bryan Ruiz but then had defender Oscar Duarte sent off in the 66th minute with a second yellow card for a mistimed tackle on Jose Holebas.

The red card changed the game at Arena Pernambuco and Greece poured forward for most of the remainder of the match.

The Greeks equalized in injury time when defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos smashed in a rebound to finally make the team's numerical advantage pay.

Greece continued to storm forward in extra time but couldn't find a way past Navas, who made the victory-clinching save in the shootout after saving his team for most of the match with a succession of last-gasp stops.

The victory delighted the majority of the just over 41,000 fans in Recife as the Brazilian locals shouted for Costa Rica throughout the round-of-16 game.

While the Costa Rican team made World Cup history for its small Central American nation, it also ended Greece's best-ever run. Greece was playing in the second round for the first time.

After a scoreless first half, Ruiz slid his low shot into the right corner of Greece's goal for the lead after a pull-back by winger Christian Bolanos from the left.

Duarte made a clumsy challenge on Holebas, however, and Costa Rica reverted to all-out defense to try and hang on for the win.

They nearly did it, but yet another save from Navas fell to Papastathopoulos in the first minute of injury time and he powered his shot home to give Greece hope.

Fighting our way through crowds along the beach and up the main street of town with hoards streaming in and out of bars in celebration, a friend, recently arrived from Dallas, commented on how much safer he felt here than back in Texas after a big game. The "here" is obviously Costa Rica, a nation where people have the right to bear arms when trained and qualified. Way to go, guys and Pura Vida for the game against the Netherlands.

Baseball is a very boring game. Sometimes they only score 1-1 and they have to play six more the same games to find the winner. That is what I call the most boring game in the world, almost no action compared to the world football (called soccer in the US).

Congrats to Costa Rica, unlike Mexico you treat your immigrants with respect and don't rape and slaughter them. While Mexican's love to claim they are indigenous, less than 1% actually are and the others act just like their Spanish/White conquistador blood lines and continue to slaughter. Karma rules.

Many of my fellow Americans don't appreciate soccer for one reason:
it takes SKILLS to play with your feet!!!!
They rather toss a ball to one another and say "good catch", now that's a skill right?
Pathetic.....
p.s. before you start ranting, i'm an American tired of small minded comments.

Actually ESPN did a study of the sports that require the most athleticism and/or skills. Soccer finished 11th behind baseball. Hockey is one of the top skill sports because it requires all facets of the body in sync.

You try to throw a ball 50yards, possibly while running, with the receiver being defended by one or two defensive backs and possibly 7 others rushing you to drop you in your tracks. YES that is a skill and why so few do it as good as Brady and Manning.

Soccer has been taught to public school children in the US for sixty years and never stopped getting more popular. In Washington DC there are over seventy futbol clubs composed of the best local players from Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. In practice meets, stray north American joggers are always welcome to join. Futbol in Latino bars is on all the flat screens, and watched by the entire population. We have important futbol meets at the Robert F Kennedy stadium on Capitol Hill. No one in Washington DC thinks futbol is less interesting than baseball or American Football

Boring North American and British people talk to much during the World Cup. They both have shot teams and **** culture. Both nations of excuses and the people 99% just need to not waste the worlds oxygen. The few that are good move out of these nations because they are embarassed. Note how many are leaving North America as the place is a joke.
I wish for all those who hate soccer please do not watch the game. I hate North American pro and college sports so I never watch them. Problem solved

domingfan, are you French? You keep bashing American's. If your here then get the hell out if you don't like our sports priorities. Respect the people that love Soccer here and accept the Band wagoner's. I'm sure you were a Packer fan when Lynn Dickey was their Quarterback, if you even know who he is.
