Oldman apologizes for defending Gibson and Baldwin

By David Bauder

NEW YORK (AP) - Gary Oldman has apologized for defending fellow actors Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin from critics of their controversial remarks about Jews and gays.

"I am deeply remorseful that comments I recently made in the Playboy Interview were offensive to many Jewish people," Oldman wrote in an open letter to the Anti-Defamation League late Tuesday. "Upon reading my comments in print - I see how insensitive they may be, and how they may indeed contribute to the furtherance of a false stereotype."

During the expletive-laden Playboy interview, Oldman decried the "political correctness" that ensnared Gibson and Baldwin. Gibson delivered an anti-Semitic rant in 2006 while being arrested for drunk driving, and he later apologized. Baldwin last year was accused of using an anti-gay slur in a New York City street confrontation.

Oldman said that Gibson "got drunk and said a few things, but we've all said those things. We're all (expletive) hypocrites." He said he didn't blame Baldwin for using the slur because somebody bothered him.

"Mel Gibson is in a town that's run by Jews and he said the wrong thing because he's actually bitten the hand that I guess has fed him, and doesn't need to feed him anymore because he's got enough dough," Oldman said in the interview.

In his later letter, first reported by the industry website Deadline.com, Oldman wrote, "I hope you will know that this apology is heartfelt, genuine, and that I have an enormous personal affinity for the Jewish people in general, and those specifically in my life."

Oldman's Playboy comments had drawn a sharp response from Jewish leaders.

"Gary Oldman wants Jews to 'get over' what Mel Gibson said. But what Gibson said, was the slogan that Adolf Hitler used to murder six million Jews," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. "(Oldman's) comment that Hollywood is a town 'run by Jews' has a very familiar sinister ring to it that is the anthem of bigots and anti-Semites everywhere. That has nothing to do with political correctness," Hier said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Douglas Urbanski, Oldman's longtime manager, said in an earlier email to the AP that his client was not defending his fellow actors, despite Oldman's comment in the article that he was indeed defending the actors.

"It simply cannot be read any other way, and to put it any other way is simply cherry picking something, stating it inaccurately, and creating news where there is none," Urbanski said.

He said Oldman was "illustrating the absurd by being absurd."

Oldman stars in the upcoming "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," out July 11. Distributor 20th Century Fox declined to comment on Oldman's Playboy remarks.

Oldman also appears in a TV commercial for the HTC mobile phone company, which sought to distance itself Tuesday from the actor's remarks. "Mr. Oldman's views are his own and do not reflect the views of HTC," the company said in a statement.

Everyone is a coward..... so afraid of jews and blacks, why apoligize for everything? When the rapper Camron said something about killing crackers, nobody gave a ****, when black comedians or jewish comedians make fun of chinese people or hispanics, nobody gives a ****.... this is so ridiculous.

Coward. I am sick and tired of the double standard whites have to deal with. Black History Month, what BS, Black Power, BS. Whites are not allowed either, or they are called racist. Why are the blacks not racists? A black comedian can make racist jokes about whites, everyone laughs, even the ignorant whites. If a white were to do a joke about blacks, well, stop the presses, "White racist comedian booed off stage for racist jokes about blacks. BS! Blacks are always calling each other n*****, but if a white does it, well it's hate speech. Double standard BS. The mere fact I had to use n***** proves my point. Equal rights, fine, then stop the double standard BS.

Why apologize if that is the way you feel? Are you being politically correct? There are way too many people/groups that wear their feelings on their shoulder. If a person des not agree with the homosexual lifestyle and the homosexual calls that person a "homophobe" is the homosexual a bigot? Of course he or she is, but that bigotry seems to be accepted.

Liberals claim to be the people with compassion and want to help everyone so its fair, but they fail to see that they ( liberals ) are actually the racists by controlling what everyone says .

Does saying somethng other than what you really feel make you a better person? I think not. You should never be bullied into saying someting you don't feel because of repercusions.

Political correctness is destroying America and every sane concerned citizen must work and speak out against it. It only allows the bad guys a stronger voice who ever they may be. Leave Jews alone. They have done nothing wrong. But the others. Its time to call a spade a spade and stop political correctness in America. Its harmed and lowered the bar on everything from race relations to marriage.

Grant me patience...Jews are relentless in attacking ANYTHING anti Jewish. We are referred to in an insulting way as by jews as "non jews" or shiksha or goy and I don"t contact the Irish catholic anti-defamation league nor is there one. Perhaps jews would be more appreciated if they just dropped the anti-jewish stance entirely. When they talk of the Holocaust it is focusing on jews while many other ethnicities were also targeted. I realize there are many jewish people in entertainment but their emphasis on their own persecution is getting old. Move on and appreciate other ethnic groups and quit focusing on everything jewish. And no, I am not prejudiced, I just want some surcease in the constant public discussion of how jews are misused, misunderstood and not appreciated. No one needs to appreciate a people who so appreciate themselves.

We all need to get over things from the past. Christians need to get over that crucifing Jesus thing, I mean it was 2000 years ago he was hung up on that cross. Palestinians need to get over this is our land thing. It hasn't been your land for nearly a century. Blacks need to get over we wuz slaves. Lot's of people were slaves. Homosxuals need to realize there are good people who just don't see the anus as an entry orifice. Jewish people need to stop dwelling on their past persecutions too.

If I don't agree with the president, you call me racist. If I don't agree with gay marriage you call me homophobic. If I don't agree with immigration policy, you call me intolerant. Who is really the intolerant one, when you cannot accept another's opinion without name calling.
