Florida man may lose home over display of American flag

Man Fined For Displaying American Flag In Flowerpot

Florida veteran Larry Murphree has been charged by his homeowners association for displaying an American flag in his flower pot, Fox News reported.

"When I first moved here, I loved it. ... But it's just gotten more ... nitpick more and more," Murphree told WAWS.

WTLV reported that each day Murphree keeps the flag in the pot is a $100 fine. The homeowner is now being billed $8,000 for violation and attorney fees.

The flag behind him is upside-down because Murphree says the association put a foreclosure lien on his house to collect the money.

He has filed a lawsuit against the HOA and claims it violates his rights under the Freedom to Display American Flag Act of 2005. According to court documents, he settled another flag lawsuit in 2012, and less than two weeks later, the condo's board of directors came up with new rules and guidelines for displaying flags.

These new rules limit homeowners to displaying only one portable American flag daily, and it has to be in a flag bracket.

Murphree says he has already fought the association once before, and he won't stop until he can freely display his flag.

"(I'm) disappointed that they just keep going after the American flag," Murphree said.

In March, Murphree's lawsuit against the HOA was dismissed in federal court, but he can now file his lawsuit in state court.

Check out another man's reaction when he was fined by his homeowner's association:

Who are these anti American monsters that are so offended by our flag? Why are they even allowed in this country that so many good men fought and died for? They should be ashamed of themselves for the way they treat our veterans and our flag.

Another reason not to move into a HOA development. The original intent is to keep up the property values and the end result is a neighborhood full of power hungry bullies.

The biggest threat to patriotism in the USA are these Nazi-like homeowners associations. To hell with them and their stupid rules. When it comes to being a patriotic American, these damn organizations fail in all aspects. When I lived in Jacksonville Beach, I had the same problems with the so-called board of directors and their ridiculous attempt at limiting our rights as American citizens.

I can't express it more clearly than to say if you are looking to by a home why in hell would you want to live under the rule of a bunch of busy hens? Your castle is your home , the old saying goes. To subject yourself to the will of others when making the single most expensive purchase in you life is fool hearty. I believe if more and more folks steered away from these mini dictatorships they would go the way of the do do bird. But for those of you who willing choose to live in a home you are paying for under the rule of others you had better read their rules and live by them or find yourself in this poor sods situation.

This Country is not " Free". I was told by a Judge in my Custody Battle screaming at me " I had no Rights"! Illegals have right because they are not citizens. I want to be an illegal.

Many HOAs are corruptive and HOA board members taking bribes of certain kinds or favors from the HOA hired management companies who works only for the HOA board not the homeowners! HOA should be ended and replaced by a government office, not by those so-called self-governing entity that is not governed by the people but by a few selfish homeowners grasping power in their neighberhoods.

Exactly. The only way to fight an HOA is to send thugs to the board members homes to take care of business. You can't fight them legally as they are spending home owners money against your own.
