Potential outcomes of Group G, all four teams left with one game to play

What Are Team USA's Chances Of Advancing In The World Cup?

The United States and Germany both have four points and are atop Group G over Ghana and Portugal who have one point each. In the group stage of the World Cup, wins are worth three points, and draws are worth one point. All four teams have one game remaining.

Germany and the U.S. will play Thursday in Recife, and Ghana and Portugal will kick off at the same time in Brasilia.

Here are the scenarios:

-If the U.S. wins: The Americans are through to the next round as the winners of Group G and will play the second place team from Group H. (Belgium currently leads Group H, followed by Algeria, Russia and South Korea)

Germany would finish second unless Ghana or Portugal won and passed Germany on goal differential. Germany currently is plus 4, Ghana is minus 1 and Portugal is minus 4. The second place finisher plays the winner of Group H.

-If Germany wins: Germany wins the group.

The U.S. would finish second unless Ghana or Portugal won and passed the U.S. on goal differential. The U.S. is plus 1, Ghana is minus 1 and Portugal is minus 4. So, if the U.S. loses to Germany, it will be rooting for Portugal, because it's less likely that Portugal could pass the U.S. on goal differential.

-If Germany and the U.S. draw: Germany wins the group and the U.S. finishes second. The result of the other game is meaningless.

-If Ghana and Portugal draw: The U.S. and Germany advance. Germany wins the group unless the U.S. defeats them.

-Other tiebreakers: In any of these scenarios involving goal differential, if two teams are tied on points and goal differential, the next tiebreaker is total goals scored. Germany has six goals, the U.S. has four, Ghana has there and Portugal has two.

Landon Donovan could have prevented this from happening if there was a coach who did not have the arrogance to include a world class player who is a winner.
If he would have been one of the replacements instead of 3rd string players, this would not have occured; instead Portugal would have had to divert attention to him controlling the field and attacking versus playing on their heals and letting the last score go in. Plus the USA team played not to lose at the end which has been the downfall of a lot of teams who score and play prevent defense just like football teams do in the NFL. and lose in the last minute.

US blew it, they played not to lose instead of attacking and playing to win. Hopefully they win Thursday. GO USA.

If you were right they would not have scored that second gold.

Well, I have made a few comments about the US games. The name that I keep using is Bradley. He played better on Sunday, but again, he gave the ball away at the end. He should have pushed the ball forward instead of trying to back pass to no one. Ball forward, game over US advances, Portugal out and we play reserves during Germany match.

I agree, the very casual attempt by Dempsy led directly to the second Portugese 2nd goal. Even if he had just spent the 8 seconds getting control it's a US win!

Dempsey wasn't on the field for Portugal's second goal. He was replaced by Wondolowski. At least get your facts right if you are gonna talk trash about a player.

I agree, Bradley has not played well these two games. If he does not losethat ball at the end of yesterdays game USA wins...sad. But we also should have had more defenders back. No way with 30 seconds left should our defense have been so far up that they had to chase a forward back ...poor positioning.

Nobody was chasing a forward back, or tracking back as we players would say. The error was on the center back for playing space, rather than a man. Not too surprising given the conditions and that an offense player will always have more burst than a tired defender, especially a recent sub forward.

Soccer is a joke and most sports fans don't care one way or another if the US wins or loses. It's a International Third World Sport and will never be anything else. Pro Soccer failed once in this country and it will fail again no matter how hard our sports media tries to push it on us. The US team is comprised by a bunch of third world athletes that very few Americans can relate with or care about. Right now it's rah rah because the USA is still in it but just wait until they fold as they usually do and watch these so called soccer fans disappear from view. Soccer is OK in our schools so the students who can't make the baseball or football team have something to play and it's great for the girls!

Obviously you know little about soccer. Bradley, Dempsey, and Howard are the three best players on the team, and anyone with any knowledge will tell you that.

I would have to agree. Bradley looked awful to me. Half the time he looks more like a spectator than a player and when he does get the ball he loses it half the time!

What a minute! I remember when the US women's team won this World Cup thing, which wasn't all that long ago. So when did they start letting men play soccer?
