Yankees, Jeter add new teammates: children battling cancer

During their fifth annual HOPE Week, the New York Yankees welcomed three new teammates to the roster: 11-year-old Sean Callahan, 12-year-old Ryan Tucker and his 4-year-old cousin, Quinn Ostergren, who are all battling brain cancer. When an NBC reporter asked Quinn, "What do you like most about Yankee Stadium?" the answer was prompt: "Derek Jeter."

The New York Post reports Wednesday the three children, who are all battling brain cancer, signed a one-day contract and spent the day with the team. They were even were given their own uniforms and lockers.

Yankees Pitcher David Robertson told the New York Post, "The kids are so much fun. It's hard for us because we're just people too, but it is overwhelming sometimes when you meet children who are so excited to meet you."

This HOPE Week event honored Friends of Jaclyn, a foundation that pairs pediatric brain tumor patients with sports teams. Denis Murphy, the organization's president, told the Poughkeepsie Journal, "Our mission is to improve the quality of life for these children and also raise awareness. I couldn't think of a better way to get our platform and our awareness out there than the New York Yankees. It's surreal."

This is Derek Jeter's 20th and final season with the Yankees. He told NBC it's things like this that he wants people to remember him for.

"I think the legacy that means the most is being able to affect other people's lives and impact in positive ways. I hope I've been able to do that." This has certainly been a heartwarming story.
