The hottest wives and girlfriends of World Cup players

By EMILY CEGIELSKI

The World Cup has gotten off to a galloping start with astonishing upsets, surprising draws and the oust of the reigning champs, Spain. Soccer is slowly kicking its way into the hearts of tepid Americans everywhere with nearly 16 million people in the United States tuning into ESPN to watch the U.S. take down Ghana on Monday. However, not all of the best action at the World Cup happens on the field.

Known in Britain (and other soccer-loving countries) as WAGs, the wives and girlfriends of the best soccer players in the world are stars in their own right. And while many think of them as only arm candy (I dare you to say one of these women isn't gorgeous!), Time points out that many "have cultivated careers of their own" before ever dating their bodacious beaus. Many are actresses, journalists, singers and models. You might even recognize a couple.

Outside of America, the world of WAGs thrives with gossip columnists tailing each woman and speculating on every aspect of their lives. (*Note, there are two women listed as Neymar's girlfriend in the slideshow because gossip magazines can't figure out who's he currently seeing!) Quartz has published a 'Complete Guide to World Cup Sex Rules,' detailing which teams are traveling without their wives and girlfriends and what country's players are banned from having sex until the second round. (Hint: It's Costa Rica.) According to The Independent, the actions of soccer players' wives and girlfriends can truly affect how a player performs -- so, you're going to want to keep up with these stunning ladies.

I have coached soccer and football. The mindset is different because in soccer the action never stops, in football it comes to a complete halt every thirty to ninety seconds. In soccer all contribute, in the other game it is hierarchial insofar as some players are elites and pandered. In soccer you are taught to play the ball, in football you play the players. Anyone who spends time denigrating soccer should admit that their opinion is based on a complete lack of understanding of the game and also that football was created for lazy kids with limited attention spans. But again, that is just the opinion of someone who has coachedboth sides so what do I know?

In the US football was, if not "invented" first, became popular first. So when what the "rest of the world" calls football came on the "radar screens" of most Americans, it needed a distinct name. In the US most people think of four down four quarter football as well football. So, someone decided to call this other "football" game soccer. You can't really undo a century of history and culture in the US.

The word "soccer" is actually British. It derives from the game's proper name, association football, with the "soc" bit taken from the word "association" .

The reason it came into popular usage was simple: in the 19th century, football and rugby were both commonly known as football, the former dubbed "association football" and the latter "rugby football". But both phrases are a bit of a mouthful, however, so they were popularly shortened to "soccer" and "rugger" to keep things simple.

Now, your grandad and anybody else over the age of 50 probably knows this instinctively, though younger sports fans might well not since the word "soccer" hasn't been widely used in Britain for three or four decades.

You have coached, but never played either game.

What do you really know? Nothing.

She looks like a slut! Wake up America! These next several elections let's vote all these left-wing Democrats and RINO's out of office and put America back on the right track! Before you know it one will be able to marry their dog if things keep going the way they have! "Feel Good Liberal Left-Wingers" are ruining our country.

Even if they were nude, you couldnt get me to watch soccer. Even more boring than watching golf or bowling on tv... but at least with golf and bowling, it doesnt take an hour to see a point scored, and there is a definite winner at the end of it all.

What is with AOL, this page, and the ads. It's all about sexism and sex objects. Do a better job and grow up. We're not adolescents who need to be catered to by your selling shallow titillation.

I watch soccer because soccer is a great game that requires a lot of skill. If some of the players happen to be good looking, that's nice, but I couldn't really care less. I definitely don't care what their wives or girlfriends look like either; if they do something interesting, I would care about that.
