Ex-con saves 15-month-old baby

While driving down a highway in Georgia, an auto repair worker noticed something odd on the side of the road -- a 15-month-old baby.

The 1-year-old, who was crawling along the side of the highway, was fortunate to have been found by good Samaritan Bryant Collins.

"And when I got out, it was a baby. Almost right here. Almost in the highway," Collins said. His reaction? "The same as yours would have been. 'What the hell is going on? A baby?"

Collins immediately stopped his car, called 911, and stayed with the child even after police arrived.

"Honestly, that's almost a miracle -- that a 15-month-old can go that far from her house, into the woods, fall down and embankment, wind up near a major highway, and really not get hurt that bad," the sheriff told WXIA.

According to the station, the child's father was arrested after he showed up to the scene and began scuffling with police. The mother says her baby slipped out of the house when she stepped away for 10 minutes, according to NBC.

"I just want everyone to know that we're not bad parents. We have four children and they're all loved and well taken care of," she said.

Both parents expressed gratitude to Collins for rescuing their child. He says he's been working on doing the right thing.

I did 10 years in the federal institution for manufacturing cocaine, and while I was in prison, I made a very conscientious effort to change."

Fortunately, the 1-year-old only sustained very minor injuries. The father was charged with child cruelty, reckless conduct, and obstruction. There is no word yet on whether the mother will be charged, as well.
